Tests show that larfir flocks produce more eggs per I When tiie flock is small, the poul raiser often neglects good management practices, he says. "More poor quality eggs g» to market from shiall flocks because eggs are kept over a longer period of time before taking them to market," Ufford explains. But such reports should vet discourage home poultry keeftog. the poultry specialist points out The figures show, however, that good laying records follow good management. Management of a small flock of a dozen or two pullets in the backyard can be as good as on commercial farms. Many small flocks are left to shift for themselves and the result is a low average. Owners of large flocks make a business of poultry keeping and are more likely to apply newer technological improvements, Ufford explains. They buy quality chicks which are bred to lay. They feed them scientifically, house and care for them in accordance with best practices, cull low producers and keep a high proportion of young layers. Backyard poultry growers can do these things, too---but owners of small flocks will have to exercise more "know how" for each egg produced than the owner of a large flock. FMI TrwklM •( YOHMI IMTMM, Say* SpMiililt The fact that 80 per cent of young people of high school sge have defective feet is evidence of the increase of foot trouble and the need, for attention to foot health. Nearly all babies are born with normal feet. Yet by the time they are 10 years old, 40 to 10 per cent of our children have feet defects. These include red spots, blisters, ingrown toenails, corns, cslluses, and hammer toes. If neglected these foot troubles can grow into real defects. It is encouraging, health authorities point out, to know that most foot defects at children csn be avoided and that most of those of adults can be corrected. In childhood, stiff, heavy outgrown shoes account for 72 per cent of the foot defects, while too-short stockings are also disastrous. Size changes in the feet of growing children occur more frequently than often is realized. From ages 2 to 10, size may change every four to eight weeks, while in the 10-to-12 age bracket, an increase of from one to three sizes occur every 12 to 16 weeks. After age 15, the foot size usually does not change more frequently than every six months. But foot size may increase at any time during adult life. 8weet Potatoes " Cook sweet potatoes quickly and serve them piping hot to preserve as imich Vitamin C as possible,--_ May a Man Be Jailed For Throwing Kisses at a Girl? A pretty girl worked as a maid in a suburban home. One day, while she was there alone, the grocer stopped in to deliver some packages. In a sudden whim of romantic fervor he "puckered his lips and smacked them." The girl just looked at him coldly. The grocer, undeterred, tried the same thing Join oar Christmas Savings Club. She went to the police and had him arrested on a charge of assault. However, when the judge heard her story, he ordered the grocer released. After all, opined the judge, the poor fellow had merely suggested a kiss--not taken one! Is a Bus Driver to Blame For Jolting the Passengers Too Hard? A woman was standing at the rear door of a bus, waiting for her stop. As the bus neared the corner, the driver swung toward the curb, opened the door, and slammed on the brakes. The jerk was so sudden that the woman lost her grip on the railing and went flying out the door. Bruised and shaken up, she later sued the bus company for damages. The company argued that a bus driver can't avoid giving the riders a certain amount of "jolts and lurches." But the court nevertheless granted the woman's claim. The judge said that 'erking hard enough to toss a passenger right out the door was jvst a little too Is Divorce a Sign of Untrustworthy Character? A woman was hired as the manager of an apartment house, but discord soon developed between her and the owner. After a few months, he discharged her. Promptly the woman filed suit for damages, claiming that she had been promised' a full year's employment. To discredit ner "story, the owner offered to „ prove that the woman had been divorced twice--and therefore was not a person to be believed. However, the court ruled judge said that a woman may'be out this evidence entirely. At the trial, the defense attorney insisted that his client had the *'mind of a 12-year-old child" and therefore should not be held responsible for what he had done. However, the court ruled out that defense and found the janitor guilty. The judge said that, although the man was undoubtedly stupid, he did have enough sense to know right from wrong--and should have behaved accordingly. # • • Could a Judge Keep Part Of tfco Fine For Himself? The police judge of a small town was paid a very *meager salary. However, he was allowed to fatten his income by keeping a share of whatever fines he levied against petty lawbreakers. Finally a disgruntled violator decided this was unfair and took the matter to the state supreme court. The court ruled that the practice was unconstitutional and illegal, because there was altogther too much temptation for the judge to find everybody guilty! • • • A dentist was found drunk <pn the street one night, and was fined for "public intoxication." A few weeks later he pleaded guilty to a second offense--this time "driving while drunk." When the state dental board heard about the incidents, they revoked the dentist's license on the grounds, of "dishonorable conduct." He promptly carried the matter to court, claiming that he hadn't done anything serious enough to justify such severe punishment. But the court upheld the board and refused to interfere. If it hadn't been for the money that the summer visitors brought with them the farmer wouldn't have bothered- to run a boarding house. They were a lazy, shiftless bunch who never got out of bed until nine or ten o'clock. So it was with some surprise that the farmer saw one of his "guests" up bright and early one morning. "Weil, young feller," he remarked, "got up early to hear the haycock crow, I see." The young fellow wasn't as ignorant as the others. He knew the haycock was only a pile of hay so he replied instantly, "Oh, no. I got up early to tie a knot in a cord of wood." ONE WORD MORE A widow went to a spiritual seance. She asked to talk to her departed husband. "Why do you want to talk to your husband?" asked the medium. "Because he died before I finished telling him what I thought of him." Strong Case It was the young man's wedding day. That, in itself was enough to make him nervous. But here it was three o'clock and the wedding was set for four and his trousers hadn't come back from the tailor's yet. He paced up and down the floor, smoked cigarette after cigarette, and glared angrily at the clock. At last he jumped into a pair of old trousers and ran down to the tailor. "Where in thunderation are my trousers?" he shouted. "I'm sorry, sir," the tailor replied, "but the pressing machine is out of order." "Ye Gods," panted the worried groopi, "can't you do something?" "We're doing everything in our power to get the machine fixed," explained the tailor patiently. "Well, if I don't get my trousers within fifteen minutes." steamed the young man, "I'll sue you for promise of breeches." No Music Lover With her hands folded comfortably across her ample stomach Grandma smiled indulgently at her not too little granddaughter. "Ah. such a happy child," she murmured to her husband. "She's forever breaking into song." "Well, if somebody would only give her the right key she wouldn't have to break in," snapped her dyspeptic husband. WASTE OF TIME Dopey Dingle had a growth on his nose. His wife took him down to have the doctor look at it. "Well, it's really nothing," said the doctor, "I'll remove it I'll give him an anesthetic." "What?" said the wife. "I'll give him an anesthetic, so he won't know anything." "You don't have to bother with that. He don't know anything now."
