To the head of the class go a couple of boys who burned up th« local bowling alleys the past week. Here they are: Herman Steffes -- 269-202-200- 671. "8onuy" Miller -- 266-644. ,^ywould be nice for those fellows to pair up in a double* match with that kind, of bowling. Recall a 605 series for Harold Steffan and 604 for Wheelock this week. Somebody's always bowling. Mighty Dundee was beaten on the basketball court by Geneva after four years supremacy iu the Little Seven without defeat. * he Warriors looked pretty (1 beating Marengo last iMday uight for tl*elr fourtu straight conference win. It wasn't the same looking team that lost to Woodstock Hign ou our home floor Tuesday night. The Warriors had possession of the ball aplenty, but couldn't shoot for sour apples. Lake Geneva will be here Friday ifJMt. McHenry travels to Hebron next Tuesday night. If you're looking for a job, we'd suggest contacting Billy Pries. The hours are short and the pay is long. A stranger (butcher) stopped in one day recently and Billy put him to work. The fellow made a ten buck touch for advance wages and we'at out to lunch. For all Billy knows, the guy Is still lunching. V. Scotsman entered a bank and asked if he could borrow a dollar for a year. The banker thought the request unusual, but agreed, provided that he could furnish some security. The Scotsman said all he bad was a $1,000 savings bond. So the transaction was made. At the end of the year the Scotsman returned and paid back the dollar plus 7 cents interest on the loan, receiving the savings bond it> sxchange. I After the business was completed^ the bank official, pent up with curiosity, asked why the man insisted on such a strange transaction. "Well," said the Scotsman, "I visited all the other banks and each asked $5 a year rent for a safety deposit box in which to keep my savings bond--this way I lad it taken care of for 7 cents." WOODSTOCK STREAKS BEAT McHENRY 41-38 HERE TUESDAY NIGHT "Big Pete" Peterson sank a taaket in the last two seconds of gwe the Co--ops a win ov6r Crystal Lake last Sunday night. The Co-ops need more practice and will get it to the form of games from here on. Next Tuesday night the^ AAO --district basketball tournament will open in the Elgin High gym. This tourney will bring together 16 top teams in this area, includiup the 7 teams in the Northern League. -- The McHenry Coops will meet McGraw's of Elgin at 7 o'clock Wednesday flight. Other than the Northern League teams entered are two teams from Elgin, an aggregation of stars from Dundee, Hampshire, Sycamore, Joliet, Woodstock, Wauoo'ad^ and Waterman. Carl Neiss found the range last Sunday night with some nifty long shots. If Carl can start hitting the way he used to drop 'em, the Co-ops' chances art; looking up. The Blue Streaks of Woodstock gave McHenry the blues with a 41 to 38 setback to our Warriors here Tuesday night. As in days of old, a large crowd turned out. After all. it was a McHenry- Woodstock game with a rivalry that surpasses many other contests. Both teams got off to a miserable start and, while McHenry controlled the ball most of the flrat half, the scoring was hardly worthy of varsity rating. Woodstock scored 5 points in the first quarter and McHenry scored & on free throws. Dwight Dowell sank two Bhots to start off the second . quarter and the tarns played: n an evea basis up to half time when Woodstock lead'16 to 14. , Things would change in the second half. That's what McHenry followers thought. They did change in the third period when the Warriors scored 15 points to hold a 29 to 28 edge. Then came an exciting and wild fourth period. The home boys made a couple of wild passes reverted to the kind of shootiag that eventually gave them a .171 percentage for the entire game. Jack Laures, who led the McHenry boys with 15 points and a stellar defensive game, was fouled in the final minute: The pressure was on. but Jack sank his first shot. The second shot missed and Woodstock led McHenry a wild chase for the ball until the final whistle. Ralph Stork, a steady performer, led Woodstock with 8 baskets. The McHenry Junior Varsity won their game 33 to 29. Woodstock led at half time 21 to 14 but McHenry came through in an exciting nip-and-tuck last half to take the game. Jim Sales was high scorer for McHenry with 9 points while Don Andreas and Duane Schmitke were close behind with 8 and 7 points respectively.
