A survey Of 1.500 men in the Navy during »<he war, for instance showed tha* f8 percent were infected. Ringworm of the scalp, which fe known technically as tinea _Jon8urans. appears in gray scaly ^pots on the scalp which may flange from pin point size to two Inches in diameter. On other parts of the body, the disease is known as tinea circin- «ta or dermatophvtosis, but the irpe found on the feet has been re familiar in advertisements proprietary remedies as ath- ; fete's foot. Because the pinkish, ! #ealy. elevated patches of infectl> n on. the skin extend outward 4nd tend to die out in the center, tfiey may sometimes take a circufcr form which explains the name Jfneworm. •JT Ringworm is highly contagious ibd extremely difficult to elimiffeate. The detailed, long-term, persistent treatment should be un- -^ertaken only under the care of . % doctor, and no one should attempt to diagnose and treat with drugstore remedies this fungus Infection in himself or his children. Recurrences are frequent. - for the fungus often makes its fay into hair follicles or deep %bto the skin under treatment, giving the impression the disease J* cured, only to emerge and begin its attack all over again. • T h e r e i s no o i n t m e n t , d r u g o r Other medication which is suitable In all cases and it frequently requires careful study of the individual case by a well-trained yhysician to devfse a method of treatment which will bring the Infection under control. Ringworm of the scalp does not > • Cause permanent loss of hair. Because it is so contagious, children v Should be warned against exchanging hats with their school mates, for instance, and should tk» taught to place a coat or other garment op the back of a theatre •eat before resting the head against it. . The prevention of ringworm on Other parts of the body, especially Jfae feet, is a complex one, involving a daily foot b a t h, thorough drying, use of a medicated powder, removal of loose •kin, wearing light shoes, and •voiding walking bare-footed in public bathing pfaces. Mild fungvs- killing medication should be •sed on the feet after swimming at a public beach or pool. Many beaches and pools require users to walk through a foot bath containing a chemical which kills fungus, but this is now discredited. and it has been found more satisfactory to scrub the floor thoroughly daily with an antiseptic solution. Parents and teachers should Watch for symptoms of the condition such as irritation, itching, loss of hair in patches, and place a child under mtdical care immediately, if the symptoms are observed 1 . fiMfrapfcy Inspirit Swiss to Innovation Geography is th# mother of Invention in the land of the edelweiss and alpenstock. The news that icy Alpine lakes are doing duty as giant "deep freezers" for food storage is but another example of the ingenuity with which the Swiss have made te most of a mountainous land only slightly larger than the combined areas of Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island. By converting geographic liabilities into assets, the people have secured a high level of prosperity, a traditionally democratic government and a well established neutrality. • The Swiss AlpS) for example, seemed to have little to offer, originally, beyond spectacular beauty. Covering two-thirds of the na- > tion's land area, the mountains were poor in minerals,- however rich they might be in awsome expanses of barren rock, or fields of ice and snow. Moreover, they served to isolate the inhabitants and posed a major problem in communication and transportation. The invention of a practical steam locomotive in the early 19th century gave the Alps an economic new look. It brought the lucrative Swiss tourist industry into being and simultaneously paved the way forts more complete Integration of the country. Switzerland was among the first ten nations to establish railroads. Today the country claims the densest railway system in the world with more than 3,600 miles of track, reaching into every segment of the diminutive land. With the railroads came thousands of tourists--sightseers and sportsmen-- who found Swiss hospitality an art By 1943 Switzerland had over 7,000 hotels and an international reputation for housekeeping.
