VETS MAKE TIGERS HUSTLE TO GAIN 10 TO 6 VICTORY The Crystal Lake Vets tlfrew a scare into the Johnsburg Tigers last Sunday on the Johnsburg diamond, but eventually came out second best in a 10 to 6 ball game. The Tigers put across five runs in the first inning, then were faced with a surprise attack by the Vets who scored six runs in the top half of the second. When the Vets continued to hit Suhrbier's offerings, Klapperich was called in to clear up a basesloaded mess and pitched shut-out ball the rest of the way. Howie Freund and J, Feffer led their teams in hitting, each getting a double and triple. Johnabarg (10) A.B. K. H. E. Meyers, RF, IB 5 1 2 A. Jackson 5 *0 R. Wisconsin, I feel qualified to give expert advice tc the beginner in regard to the proper technique, for muskie fishing. To begin with you can begin at the beginning or start at the finish. If this sounds confusing it should be because I am having a hard time concentrating with the juke box going. But getting back to this beginnings at the finish it goes like this. Muskie fishing should begin and enda at any local tavern where natives hang out. Natives are fishermen Who have actually caught muskie- A new muskie man will get just as many muskie by never leaving the bar stool as he will by actually going out to a lake, If he does go to a lake and fishes for a muskie, he will return to the tavern frequently for advice and will wind up his expedition right back at the tavern where muskie were first talked about. So first the Visit to the tavern. This should take about two or three days in order to assimilate facts in regard to muskie fishing. The rookie will do, well to .keep a clear head as he soaks up litis knowledge and wisdom of the natives. By drinking only when the house buys a drink, a man can stay cold sober for as long as he wishes. The next thing needed is equipment. Equipment for muskie fishing consists of tackle, gaff hook, lures, net, pole, mossuito dope, another dope, in my case this Was Martin Wegener (to row the boat) and a bottle of Old Sockwash. Breaking this down tackle consists of any good strong storestring, linen line, nylon line, or binder twine. A gaff hook is used for pulling the muskie into the boat. Substitutes are rakes, hoes, axes, cant hooks, or baseball bats. A gaff hook in the majority of cases can be omitted entirely as it will never be used and will only become . usty laying in the bottom of the boat, however, a nice shiny, wicked looking gaff hook looks good on the wall of any sportsman's den--so go buy one. Lures for muskie are many and varied. Standard lure of assorted shapes and sizes can be bought in any sport shop. Most of these will never make a muskie "bat an eye" but they are * pretty sight when skimming thronfk the water or when given a simofilte job and layed on the top trty of a tackle box. When all statrtifefd lares have been exhausted, then muskie men resort to strategy. First they give muskie a chance at the "salad bowl" or "Smorgasbord". This is done by hooking the tackle box on the line, opening it and lowering it into the water. The \>ox is then slowly towed or trolled through muskie waters giving the brute a chance to take 'lis pick. If this fails, row for shore at once and' grab anything close at hand. An old straw hat, sui old shoe, tin cans, ^ dead cat, your false teeth or the kitchen sink. Any of thiB trash is again towed through mtskie water. If the fish does not rise to this, re turn to shore, go to the . local tav ern and announce that "they aren't hitting today". A net is necessary in' case you are fishing in a lake or goldfish pond about eight feet in diameter where casting isn't practical. A pole can be anything from a willow sapling to p short pie«e of three quarter inch pipe with a reel attached. This last item is known as a muskie rod. A pole and ree? are not -necessary however, as the |tackle may be tossed in the water with the bare hands, and then either retrieved or the fisherman can row away and forget about it. Mosquito dope is the finest piece of equipment in the tackle box and is the easiest and most simple to use of any of the junk you are carting along. It 1b also the most effective. The last piece of equipment, the other dope, can be anyone who thinks he knows aB much about muskie fishing as you think you do. We won't go into detail about what the bottle of Old Sockwasli is used for as any old muskie man will be glad to show the beginner how to use it. * Muskie are found in lakes, rivers, creeks, behind rock, under weeds, under fallen logs and in any other body of water but the one in which you ase fishing. Muskie bite on clear days, calm days, dark days, cold days, warm days, windy days, week days, Sundays and holidays. Muskie always bite on the day before you earner or the day after you've gone home. Robert J. Frisby, Jr. Box 114, McHenry, III. P. S. The Sham rocks were leading at the titn/ 3 to 0. Murphy pitched for McHenry and had only allowed two hits in the first four innings. He had struck out five and walked no one. The Shamrocks scored their first run on one hit and some fancy base running. Andreas walked to open the inning. Miller sacrificed and when the Hebron third baseman left third base open, AndBeas went to third. He scored a moment later,\on a single by Jerry Larkin. / In the fourth Murphy led off with a single to center. Knox popped out Rosing singled to right, Murphy stopping at second. Murphy stole third and Rosing second while the catcher held the ball. Andreas' single, scored both runners. The game at this time was being played in a steady rain. After Hebron went out in order in the fourth, Miller led off in the fifth by grounding out to the third baseman. With McCulla at bat the rain became a regular downpour and the game was stopped. After twenty minuteB the game was officially called off, CARD OF THANK9 We wish to take this opportunity to thank the Catholic Order of Foresters for their support at the polls last Saturday; alBO friends and relatives for their assistance at the election.
