CROP OUTLOOK e Illinois corn crop, steadily approaching maturity, will probably not be much hurt by insects or disease this season, according to the weekly bulletin issued by the state and federal departments of agriculture. About 75 per cent of the entire acreage is now reported in or, past the dough stage, and only a few late-planted fields in northern areas are thought to be in any danger of -an early frost. Soybean prospects are also excellent, with fieldB showing yellowing leaves on half or more of the acreage, in southeastern Illinois. A few early fields have been harvested in the extreme southern part of the state, but large-scale combining is not expected until late in September. The average date, of the first killing frost varies from about Oct. 10 Jn northern Illinois to around Oct. 20 in the southern areas. Increasing the speed of the average car from 4C to 60 miles per hour requires an extra gallon of gas for about every 50 miles. So for economy a? well as safety, the Chicago Motor club advises, slow down on the open road. According to the Chicago Motor club, one-third of all cars in use today are more than ten years ibid. while one-half are at least eight years old and have been driven an average of 79,000 miles. A meeting of the business men took place at the MeHenry Pleasure club's quarters one evening last week and after an hour's talk over the situation it was decided to close their respective places of business all day Sunday from Oct. 1, 1911, to April 1, 1912. The attraction at the Central, "The Tale of a Coat," was not given the patronage that the show deserved. The specialties were all good, especially the tenor selections by Frank Howard. The engine house at^he local Borden factory has again been equipped with a whistle, for which all employees, as well as the citizens in general, feel grateful.
