CARRIER ADDRESSES A custom of almost a hundred years ago is recalled, by an array of "carrier addresses" now on exhibit at the Illinois State Historical library in Springfield. These "addresses" are poems written and printed especially for the newspaper boys of that time to deliver with their papers on New Year's Day in the hope of receiving tips. The library's exhibit includes "addresses" from Freeport, Rockford. Monmouth, Lacon. Peoria and Jacksonville newspapers. The one from the Freeport Bulletin of Jan. 1, 1877. is the most ornate of the lot, while one from the Jan. 1, 1858, issue of the Illinois Gazette of Lacon, though Mr. Milinac intends to drive to < °n a single sbeet, represents a Phoenix.
