LC.H.S. ACTIVITIES Doris Fabler ft Peffj Selsdorf The administration at Northwestern University dt the Evanston campus have a day set aside for Seniors who are prospective Northwestern students. The day's activities, which featured a free lunch, included several interesting lectures, a concert and tours of jLhe campus. Several McHenry Seniors, Paul Marke, Glen Marunde, Gene Perry, Charlotte Hogan, Valeria Johnson, and Peggy "Selsdorf were lured by the prospect of a free lunch and some information on Northwestern. There was a large representation of seniors from all parts of Illinois, as well as several seniors who had traveled from Milwaukee and other parts of Wisconsin, and a German exchange student who noped to remain in the States to go to Northwestern next year. The seniors first met in the new T e c h n i l o g i c a l I n s t i t u t e , w h e r e most of the day's activities took place. There they attended a lecture on "Asia, Its People and Its Problems", a demonstration on " C h e m i s t r y a n d E n e r g y " a n d group discussions on special fields of concentration such as uatjmmerce, journalism, liberal arts, and education. In contrast to the morning session, the primary purpose of which was to demonstrate the academic qualities of Northwestern, the afternoon was devoted to entertainment. and illustrations of social | Senior Play Tryouts The director of our class plays, Miss Tully, will choose a 15-mem- Ober cast from those who try out Wednesday and Thursday evenings for the senior play. The play she has chosen is entitled "Strange Boarders" by George Batson and Jack Kirkland. This play is about a delightful scatterbrained maiden lady who runs a boarding-house and her adopted daughters. The play revolves around the efforts of an amusing , .band of bank robbers who apply f-ror rooms in her boarding house posing as respectable school teachers. All in all. the play is going to be very amusing, and it will be on the evening of April 4. The play calls for eight boys and seven girls. Boys' Intramural Sports The basketball during noon hour is coming alone full force, the standings are as followed: Paul Marke's team is tied first place with Jerry Long with 9 wins and 2 losses; John Davidson in second place with 7 wins and 4 losses; and with 6 wins and 5 mishaps. Don Thiel comes up in, third place. Rich Nowak is now holding fourth place with 5 wins and 6 losses. The team in which Rich Matthews is captain is in fifth place with 4 wins and 7 losses, Dick Widen tomes in sixth place with 4 wins and 7 loses, and last, but not least, we have Jerry Cristy in seventh place with no wins and 11 losses. . '•; Prom Theme The theme committee a meeting last Monday and decided on the theme of the prom. After some discussion, we decided en "An Evening In Paris" as our theme. We would like to have the scene resemble a side-walk cafe in the evening, with a dome-like sky. Also, we hoped on having the underclassmen serve for us and they will be dressed in various costumes, such as the French sailor, the cook and' others. tAfter a considerable amount Of discussion, the location committee is planning on having the prom in the new gym. Senior Class Plaj Miss Tully, director of the senior play, selected a cast After the try-outs Wednesday and Thursday. The cast includes Ann Smith as Candy, Frank Smith as professor, Louise Barbier as Glory, Audrey Andreas as Cordelia, Barb Smale as Myrtle Hodge, Dick Widen as i«on Daggett, Rich Fuhler as Smiley, Jerry Cristy as captain. Merle Freund as Joey, John Davidson as John, Peggy Selsdorf as Amity, Joan Pillar as Priscilla, Arline Svoboda, Bernie Buss as Boston and Jim Strom as deacon. Red Cross Movie A movie was shown to the students during noon last Thursday. The movie was sponsored by the Red Cross and was free to the juniors, who won the Red Cross drive; the other students had to pay to get in. There were three short movies. Sectional Wrestling Friday night, some of the wrestling team went to Waukegan to wrestle and see who was to go downstate. We are sorry to hear that only one fellow from McHenry won his match and that was Don Theil. He went back Saturday afternoon and had to wrestle last year's state champion in his class, who was from Waukegan. After a hard struggle, Bod lost by a pin. • Skating Party The juniors are trying hard to raise enough money to give a good prom this year, so I just wanted to remind you that you could help by going to the skating party they are having Thursday night. Girl's All Star The girls' all star game will be held next Thursday after school. The seniors will play the juniors and the sophomores will play the freshmen as it has been done before. No teams have been chosen as yet That's Basketball??! It seems to me that I heard we had some basketball game going on last Friday in Delavan. It was also the last game in the Swani conference. I heard that six of our players fouled out in two minutes. I must say, that really must have been some game. Even if we lost, we must say this much for our team, they certainly have been playing some wonderful basketball and we can't complain over such small incidents as thAt. Spring Grove McHenry Among Counties Adding New Precincts Secretary of State Edward J. Barrett has announced that the total number of election precincts in Illinois is 9,611, an increase of 163 since 1950. The figure is based on data gathered from county clerks and the board of Election Commissions in the state's 102 counties. Biggest increase was inr Cook county, where the number of precincts rose 102. Other increases were; Peoria, 19; Du Page, 10; Livingston, 7; Lake, 6; Rock Island. 5; McHenry, 4; Winnebago, 3; Madison and Tazewell, 2 each; La Salle, Morgan, Moultrie and Ogle, 1 each. Alexander county lost one precinct. McHenry County now has fortyone precincts. (By Mrs. Charles Freund) Services at St. Peter's church on Wednesday marked the opening of the holy season of Lent. Mass was read at 8 o'clock, followed by distribution of ashes. In the evening at 8 there were Lenten services and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Lenten services will be held at St. Peter's every Wednesday night and there will be Stations of the Cross every Friday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Members of her club were entertairted by Mrs. Regina Schaefer at The Point in "Fox Lake on Wednesday night of last week. A lovely lunch was Served, with table decorations appropriate to the Valentine season. A social evening at cards was enjoyed and prizes went to Mrs. Catherine Kagan, Mrs. Arthur Klein and Mrs. Emma Kattner. Those from here who attended other than mentioned were Mrs. Charles Freund, Mrs. Ray May and Mrs. Luella May. The Christian Mothers and Children of Mary sodalities held their regular meeting on Thursday night. Plans were made for a card party to be held on the eve of St. Patrick's day, Sunday night, March 16. Two new members were introduced Mrs. Frances McNally and Mrs. Frances' M. Kochs. A committee for the next meeting was appointed with Mrs. Emma Kattner as chairman. After the meeting, cards and bunco were enjoyed ahd priiee went to Mrs. Frances Kochs, Mrs. Luella May, Mrs. Ben May, Mrs. Math Nimsgern, Mrs. Frank Tlnney and Mrs. Frances McNally. A lovely lunch was served by the committee in charge. Mrs. Alice Wagner was hostess to the members of her club at her home on, Tuesday night Games of five-hundred were played and prizes went to Mrs. Charles Gillespie, Mrs. Peter May and Mrs. Frank May. Refreshments were served after cards. Sunday guests in the Frank Tinney home were Mrs. John Tlnney and daughter, Lorretta, of North Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. George Mueller of Island Lake. Pfc. Chaster Stevens spent a weekend furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. CheBter Stevens. He had been on maneuvers at Pottsdam, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Huff and daughters, Joanne and Diane, of j Chicago spent Sunday with his father, Mike Huff. Mr. and Mrs. Math Nimsgern and Art Nimsgern visited Martin Nimsgern at the Home of the Aged in Freepprt on Sunday. They also had a visit with Steve Klein, who is at Freeport, too. A nice crowd attended the card party sponsored by the P.T.A. at the public school on Thursday night. Games of pinochle, fivehundred and bunco were played and many nice prizes were given. Mrs. C. L. Stevens was the winner of a special prise. Among those from here who enjoyed the hard times dance in Richmond on Saturday night were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown, Mr. and Mrs. George Fiersching, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Miller. Billy is training in Florida wUJU Ufa Boston Braves. ,, SURVEY REPORT Following the discovery of mosquitoes resistant to DDT in northeastern Illinois last summer, scientists of the state natural history survey are watching the situation closely so that if necessary a quick change can be made to other insecticides or to different methods of control. This is disclosed in a report just issued by the survey. Other recent activities of survey scientists include expanded research on bob-white quail Hfid stream fishes. Study of oak wilt, insidious disease of shade and forest trees, is yielding information that may give a clue to the means by which the wilt is spread over long distances, the report said.
