Stf CROP OUTLOOKS With wet SQil hindering field work of Illinois farmers, only about half of their spring plowing for corn and soybeans is completed, according to the weekly crop report of the state and federal departments of agriculture. Prospects for an excellent winter wheat crop are being maintained in most areas, although a few fields show winter killing and water damage. About 90 per cent of the oats seeding is finished. The outlook for fruit is generally good, the report says. Annual* Carnival Aroused National Many a mother has told her youngsters, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!" Curiously enough, it was this same determined spirit that gained official recognition for Mother's Day -- just thirty-eight years ago. Efforts to establish this sentimental holiday actually began shortly after the Civil War. But it wasn't until 1914 that Miss Anna M. Jarvis finally convinced ' Congress to authorize Mother's day as an annual event. ,, | As a young girl, Anna Jarvis J lived in Grafton, W. Va. There ner own mother, Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis, had once organized a "Mother's Friendship Day" to end the feuds and bitterness between families whose men had {ought as Union and Confederate soldiers. It was Mrs. Jarvis' dearest wish that some one, some time, would succeed in making a natioa-wide Mother's Day possible. One short-lived attempt. took place in 1887, when Miss Mary Towles, Sasseen, a school teacher in Henderson, Ky., began holding exercises each year to honor mothers. Her program was adopt-' ed in 1890 by the schools of Springfield, Ohio, but it spread no further. Then in 1907, two years after her mother died, Miss Jarvis occupied herself completely with plans tor an annual observance of Mother's Day. She spoke before men's and women's clubs and meetings of all kinds. And to contact every possible source of support, she carried on extensive correspondence with many public officials, clergymen, and editors. To set an example, thelcountry's first real Mother's Day services were held in Grafton at Andrews Methodist Episcopal church on May 10, 1908. Both Anna and Mrs. Jarvis had taught Sunday School there, and today it is proudly acclaimed as. the "Mother Church of Mother's Day."
