This unit of Wonder Lake is one of the few on the east side that is unincorporated. All the others have been incorporated for some time. Most of them take care of their own roads, snow plows, and their beaches. * Indian Ridge is presently hlacktopping its roads. Wonder Center already has blacktopped most of its roads as has Wickline Bay. v Named To Committee Mrs. Marian Cannon was named to the veterans' craft committee the county unit of the Ameri- J Legion Auxiliary Friday at eting held in Woodstock. Gospel Church New* The Vacation Bible School will close this Thursday Evening,, Aug. 13, at 7:45, with a program given by the children of the school. Parents and friends are invited to come and hear the boys and girls in recitation and song. There will also be interesting exhibits to view. There has been a great interest in the school, possibly more so than in any preceding year. We surely appreciate the wonderful work of teachers and workers and also for the fine co-operation of the parents. Last Sunday, August 10,v, we saw a large number of visitors from various places in our Sunday School and Services. We are happy to announce the coming of the Choir of the Ev. Free Church of Summerdale, Chicago for next Sunday evening, Aug. 17. It is the fifth annual concert here at Wonder Lak by this splendid choir of ome thirty voices. It offers a rare opportunity to hear and to enjoy Dei Vinci Exhibit Contrasts With Modern Engineering Achievements Five hundred years ago, fji engineer who foresaw the Helicopter. the machine gun, the airplane, the parachute, air-conditioning and many things considered commonplace today, was born in the little Italian town of Vinci. Today, American engineers, celebrating their 100th anniversary as a profession, can see the forerunner of many of the ideas they have brought to fruition in an exhibit at the Museum of Science > and Industry, which opened Thursday, Aug. 7. Devoted to some sixty of the maj^r engineering: ideas and invention® of Leonardo da Vinci, the exhibit presents a startling contrast to the achievements of modern engineers found in the special exhibits section of the Centennial of Engineering at the Museum. Under the sponsorship of International (l!iBusines8 Machines Corporation, models of da Vinci's ideas were built by Dr. Roberto Guatelli, from the drawings, sketches and notes left by the noted artist, scholar, engineer and scientist. The -^exhibit was brought to the Museum of Science and Industry as part of the Engineering Centennial celea truly great program of Gospel j bration now being held. It wfll be music. The service, begins at 7:45 exhibited until Sept. 28. p.m. Plar to be with us on that evening and let Inends neighbors know. and DOVE SEASON The open season on doves in Illinois this year will be from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30, inclusive, but the hours during which shooting will be permitted will be from noon until sunset, in contrast with last year, when shooting was allowed from sunrise until sunset. Leonard Schwartz, director of the Illinois Department of Conservation, expressed hearty approval of the reduction in shooting time, which was made by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Doves are classed as migratory birds and so subject to federal regulations. Pointing out that the morning respite will give the doves a better chance to rest, Schwartz added that there seems little danger of reducing the population of doves in Illinois through controlled hunting • . | Complete Use of Lee's Poultry Remedies at Wattles Drug Store, McHenry. Da Vinci's investigations embraced almost every known major field of engineering and science, among them architecture, warfare, botany, anatomy, geology, geography, hydraulics and nautics, aerology and flight. Some of da Vinci's machines were actually used successfully in his own, time. A steam gun, which discharged by the steam pressure created when water flowed into a barrel kept red hot by live coals, is credited with having fired a projectile three miles. An air-conditioning unit built for the boudoir of Beatrice d'este, wife of Leonardo's patron, also was used. While these and many others of da Vinci's ideas found application within his age, the majority of his achievements, even though many were built and saw one-time usage, were never put on a mas^-production basis. From that viewpoint alone, the visitor, in contrasting da Vinci's achievements with the other exhibits for which the Museum is world-famous, can more readily appreciate what has happened in the last 100 years of industry and science in giving this nation its high standard of living. Among the models exhibited at the Museum is da Vinci's idea of in the exhibit. One of the models, triangular shape so that one might be fired while another was being loaded and a third was cooling. The idea of multiple barrels is used today in the batteries of rocket launchers which mount multiple barrels fired simultaneously. Da Vinci also designed a double-hulled ship that Would stay afloat in battle even when the outer hull was damaged. The principle is well known and utilized today. A rotating bridge was evolved fpr protection against enemy troops. Intended to connect an island fortress with th^ mainland, it cp"uld be disconnected any time troops sought protection. Many of America's earlier bridges worked on this principle. A two-level bridge, providing an upper level for vehicles and a lower one for pedestrians offered a solution for a traffic problem that is still with "us today. All these and many others, including a military tank, scaling ladder, jack, grinding mill, coin stamper, and photographic enlargements of many of da Vinci's original drawings are on display a "helicopter", in reality a huge aerial screw run by clock-work and considered to have been the earliest conception of a modern propellor. MAKES FOB ENJOYABLE TRIP The right luggage, packed properly, will go a long way towards making your vacation trip more enjoyable, according to Curtis F, Proud, director of travel for thfe Chicago Motor club. t Proud pointed out that baggage allowances for airline flights in the U.' S. or on reduced rate transoceanic trips are limited to 44 pounds, in Canada to 55 pounds and on regular overseas flights to 66 pounds. These limitations, he pointed out, make it necessary to select luggage which is light in weight, sturdy and neat. Tourists planning transoceanic plane trips should stock up on lightweight nylon pajamas, nightcause they can be washed dried quickly, Proud said. "Good packing for a holiday", the travel director explained, "de*- mands only the barest essentials which will be needed during the trip. Smart packers use tissue paper generously in every clothing (old to prevent wrinkles. Corners and cavities in your luggage should be filled with shoes, socks, stockings, underwear, belts and other miscellaneous items. Old socks placed over shoes prevent them from soiling other garments. All bottles and jars should be checked for tightness or sealed with wax or ahhesive tape". The Motor club executive said that luggage should-never be forced shut by standing on it. If you can't close a. piece of luggage with your hands, it's over-packed and you might as well remove and Proud reminded motorists that*1 j luggage is to be carried, not pushed, kicked or dragged.
