HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS With contracts aggregating $76,600,000 already placed and two more road lettlngs yet to be made, the 1952 total of Illinois highway improvement contracts is expected to be between 80 and 90 million dollars. These figures were given by Frank N. Barker, chief state highway engineer, in at the art' meeting of the Illinois Agricultural Association in Chicago. Although the last session of the General Assembly provided fpr higher gasoline taxes and truck fees, the state will fall some 33 million dollars a year Short of meeting the needs of its primary highway system between now and 1960, Barker Said. However, he added that the Illinois road program is expected to go uiead faster than the pavfettients arc being worn out, and he expressed confidence that the highways will continue to be a vital part of the American system of transportation.
