KRAUS" Marine Staff Sergeant Lester J, Bacon, recently completed an intensive, three-week non-commissioned officers school at Camp Pendleton, Calif. The 21- year-old Marine is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester R. Bacon, 203 John street. During the daily, hour-long classes, S/Sgt. Bacon received advanced training in all military subjects with emphasis on tactics, mapping and leadership. _ -After completing the course, S. Sgt. Bacon resumed hi* normal duties with the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal company, Fleet Marine Force. Pvt. Don Matuszewski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian S. Matuszewski of Shalimar, is, now stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., with the U.S. Sixth armored division. Funds to date received through the annual Easter Seal campaign ft>r the Crippled Children's association totals $3,453.77 including Crystal Lake tag day that netted $317 and the Woodstock tag' day receipts of $292. This announcement was made by Jerry Donahue, county president of the McHenry county chapter of the Illinois Association for the Crippled. Mr. Donahue asserts that in his opinion moremoney will be forthcoming soon due to the fact that the drive is nearing its conclusion. "Although the official closing date is Easter Sunday" "he asserts, "contributions may still be forwarded to the county treasurer,'* Noah Miller, or left with him at the State Bank of Woodstock. In McHenry county, Mr. Donahue points out, "we are concentrating at present on continuing the physical therapy center twice a week at elay street school, Woodstock. Two dollars will buy one treatment for a crippled child. Can you think of a better investment for such a small sum?" Since its founding in 1921, the work of the National Society for the Crippled Children and Adults and its affiliates has progressed unceasingly. Today its ten-million-dollar program is financed by funds received during the Easter Seal appeal and certain specific projects are financed by special donations. "Sincerely, "RICHARD C. FRENCH "Alaska" JOHN BROCK DEAD McHenry county friends of John Brock, 50, of Carpentersville learned this past week of his death on Thursday, March 26. He passed away unexpectedly in Sherman hospital, Elgin. He had served as farm advisor in McHenry county for nine years until 1944. Local Area Dogs Win Show Honors " McHemy area doff owners came in for their share of honors at the International Ker.nel Club dog show of 1953; held last weekend in the Chicago Amphitheatre. Among1 the winners were two young dogs belonging to Ourrans' two granddaughters, Gloria and April. They showed a breed of dog which is considered the most rare in the tjnited Stales, the Lhasa Apsos terrier. Gloria showed. the best of breed winner, "Hamilton Mague," and another pet,, "Chickchar," also shown by the same young lady, was judged best of opposite breed. * f ' April won reserve winner's rating with "Curran's Lama" and also reserve winner with "Curran's Lhari." " The Currans won eleven ribbons with the foivr dogs entered. A former McHenry resident, Maurice LeClerc, now of Arlington Height^ took top honors with his Labrador Retrievers. His "Champion Lady Bergee" won first in the qualifying stake in the field trials and a son of Bergee, "Whitewash Truffles of Bergee,"' wear second in 'the same event. * " ' • |;l , f In the lady's handling class, two Arlington Heights women won honors, the tbp award going to the handler of "Whitewash Truffles" and second place to the handler of "Wetwagh Truffles.'* "Whitewash Truffles^ also won second place in the bench shov^ for "open all age" class. The maneuver, "Desert Rock V," is designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of atomic weapons in support of ground action. Haas, a first sergeant in Comi pany G of the 503rd Airborne infantry Regiment, Fort Campbell. Ky.. entered the Army in July, 1940.
