PHONE McHENRY 336 You Breathe To live Breathing is so Automatic that very little thought is given to it," However, the process of breathing, inhalation and exhalation, ig complex and involves numerous parts of the body together with a very sensitive control, the educational committee of the Tin, nois State Medical society observes in Health Talk. The air we breathe contains a high percentage of oxygen, which ig so necessary for life because no cell in the body can function without it. Normally the air enters the body through the nostrils. Reaching the thrbat, it passes through the larynx or voice box into the trachea or windpipe which delivers it to the lungs. The trachea is divided into numerous subdivisions similar to the branches of a tree, each of which leads to a small pocket of lung tissue. In the lungs, a chemical transformation takes place and the life giving oxygen passes into the blood stream which carries it along to the heart which pumps it to the rest of the body. The entire respiratory or thing process worka. ft* two ctions. While the medheales inhalation send the oxygen on way through the body, the te products are also picked by the brooa «cre«Un and deiHHsred to the . lung where they hr$ transferred to the air for disposal through exhalation' pr jjUtpiration. Passing from the IUngs by way of the windpipe, voice box, throat and nose, the waste products are conveyed to the outside. While ing or jab rest, the rate goes down. X d • • • Anything^ that interrupts or impedes - tins passage of the air as it entei* and leaves the body cause* difficulty in breathing. Obstruction' may be the result of an'injury to either the nasal framework, or the nasal partienlarges as air is taken in. The expansion, interestingly enough, is caused by the, contraction of muscles located between the ribs and the diaphragm, which separates the chest cage from the abdominal cavity. Normally the diaphragm is curved. As it contracts for inspiration, the muscles straighten into somewhat of a flat line, affording greater space which, in turn, allows more air to rush into the chest. The process of expiration is much simpler., since it involves only the recoil of muscles and elastic tissues to their resting pdsition. The entire mechanism is regulated by a special center in the brain, called the respiratory center. Normally, the respiratory center sends out about i eighteen impulses a minute, each Garage FRED J. Very large adenoids or tonsils are a common cause of labored breathing in children. > When nasal breathing becomes difficult, the person usawNPk to correct the other conditions modsnr treatment relieves the symptoms of difficult breaunnj, Stoee the larynx forms the narrowest por-> tion of the respiratory passage, even a small amount of swelling of this organ would effect almost a complete closure of the respiratory passage, calling for immediate surgical procedure to keep the patient alive. The swollen larynx is by-passed by making a hole in the trachea below the obstruction. A silver tabfe Inserted into the opening permits air to enter the lungs.
