Bright, bold colore and forceful patterns give a new, look to rooms that once bespoke a rather timid femininity in pale pinks and bluet. x If your daughter's a teen-ager, chances are she's mad about plaid, and would happily repeat the tartan of her favorite skirt all over her room. This being the case, let gaiety prevail and go all-out with matching coverlet, petticoat arid pillow sham for her bed. And repeat the pattern in ruffled draperies.. The *r effect is as lively as a Jfootball rally. Perhaps you, too, f^l your bedroom could use a bit V of vibrant pattern. Your husband in particular should be ^ pleased with a change. Few men find lacy ruffles to their A taste. j An eye-catching effect is achieved when you adorn your lied with a plaid petticoat, a harmonizing coverlet in a solid color, and a plaid bolster. Leave your draperies; plain to tone in with this more subtle combination. I "Youths may now start ful- I filing their eight-year military I Service obligations, which are rei ' Quired by the Universal Military I Training and Service Act, as | loon as they reach their seven- | teenth birthdays," reported Mai )or John S. Holbrook, officer in i charge of the Waukegan detach- | aient of the Army Reserve. I" Major Holbrook pointed out p..--Jpiat draft-eligible youth* may . accumulate military service by Joining an organized reserve unit |nd added that membership in uch a unit prior to induction ered these advantages ( 1. By accumulating service time in the organized Army Rev^ pcrr*, they will be less liable for ^jreesll to active duty in case of future national emergency. Reservists can choose their 'preferred branch and enter service in that branch in their attainned Reserve grade prior to feeing inducted through th* Se- 'feetive Service system. -Present laws, said , Holbrook, viguire eight years" obligated jservice from all men who enter •military service, whether they ; <iar« inducted, enlist in the regulars, or volunteer through the Army Reserve program. Presently these eight years are being ispsnt partly MI active duty, and •the remainder of the term in an • Inactive duty (Army Reserve) status. However, there are two major , classifications under which men ' can serve out inactive duty time -- the Ready Reserve and the Stand-by Reserve. Veterans in the Stand-by Reserve can be , called only in the event of allout war declared by Congress, whereas the Ready Reserve can to called, regardless of prior service, for any emergency declared by the President. . "The best way for veterans to win transfer from the Ready Reserve to the Standby Reserve is through membership in an organized Army Reserve unit," the Army Reserve officer pointed out Major Holbrook said, for example, a 17-year old youth could join one of his Army Reserve units now and be free of all military service obligations by the time he is twenty-five years old. Furthermore, if this recruit maintained membeship in the Reserve unit until he goes on active duty, and then affiliates with a Reserve unit for a time after his discharge from active duty, the last three years of his military service time could be spent | in the Stand-by Reserve. He could return to school, start a business or a career, or get married, secure in the knowledge that he would never again be called for activ# duty unless th* nation become* Involved in all-out war. "That's why every young man who wants to plan his future without worrying about his liability for recall to military service should join an organized Reserve unit," h* added.
