V. W. Kelley, horticulturist it the Illinois College of Agriculture, reports that estimates of damaged peaches run as high as 100,000 bushels. That's about 15 percent of the total Illinois peach crop this year. Some hail damage is also reported on apples in the twocounty area struck by the storm, but the apple crop will have more time to recover and the damage will not be so severe. About ten Illinois commercial peach growers were hard hit in the hail strip across Union and Jackson counties, Kelley says. Biggest single loss lo a grower was the one 80-acre block of peaches damaged in the Metzler Orchard, company area in Union county. Growers will take a lops of about $2 a bushel on the damaged peaches, Kelley says. That's sr potential loss of about $200,000 for this season's crop. The southern Illinois peach harvest is under way now, and Illinois peaches are on - the local markets. This year's Illinois peach crop is estimated at about 600,000 bushels. This compares with crops ranging from iy2 to 2 million bushels of peaches prior SALE OP SAVINGS to the severe damage from j bautv} fltlBlMfl freezing that occurred in the BONDS wUIUKQ winter of 1950-51, %which completely killed many* Illinois orchards.
