Thursday, Ociob«r 29. 1953 HOMING INSTINCTS OF CANADA GEESE STUDIED IN STATE v A project to study homing in- Jincts and migration patterns cf Canada gee.se has been launched at Illinois Horseshoe Lake wildlife refuge near Cairo, Glen D. Palmer, director of the state Department of Conservation, has announced. /A total of 500 geese will be trjtpped at Horseshoe lake and moved by truck to refuge areas ih Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. The 500 geese will be divided about equally among the three locations. FJrst of the three shipments will be released fa* Tennessee's fteelfoot Lake l^fuge. ,'*The work is being carried out i«C a cooperative project by game departments of the thirteen Mississippi Flyway states and the U, S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The geese will be marked with colored neck bands to enable biologists to identify them in the field and thus follow their' line of flight during migration movements. Biologists working on the project expect that the experimental geese may provide the nucleus which' in time will build into three distinct new flocks. All the geese to be used in the experiment are juvenile birds. It Is hoped that they will fly north next spring, nest, and return the following fall with their families to the s&me areas In which they Art to be released this fall. *> M"M1I 11 I I 1111 ••••I I* COMING EVENTS •• 8 1 i t I l"l"lH"l"t'l l 11|| i » t! • » October 29 Smorgasbord And Bazaar -- Ringwood Church -- Starts At 5:30 P.M. TEST ROAD An experimental pavement of special design, to be constructed in LaSalle county between the cities of LaSalle and Ottawa, is expected to yield information which will have important influence upon future highway plans throughout the United States, and make it possible to build better roads for less money. This prediction was made by Elmer R. Knight, acting chief engineer of the state Division of Highways, as he addressed the Illinois state Chamber of Commerce in Chicago last week.
