MINOR ACCIDENTS REPORTED IN THIS VICINITY LAST WEEK Three . young people received minor injuries last Thursday afternoon about 5:30 o'clock when their car crashed into a pole on Rt. 120, two miles east of the city. Walter C. Steiman of Ingleside was driver of the car and riding with him were Claude McDermott, 16, and Frank O" Leary, 15, both of rural McHenry. According to state police, the Steiman auto left the highway and hit a pole. Another accident occurred Thursday when an auto driven by Walter Einspar and a county squad <;ar- in which deputies were riding collided on Rt. 120, just north of Lakemoor. No one was injured. , Subscribe To The Plaindealer SOLICIT BUSINESS FIRMS FOR UDF DRIVE IN CITY Charles J. Miller, chiifTlfiah of the Illinois United Defense Fund drive in , McHenry, in cooperation with the Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, is continuing with plans for the solicitation of funds to carry out the worthwhile work of the UDF. Business firms will be contacted and later a door to door drive is expected to be" carried out in the residential sections. UDF, a federation of six national health and welfare agencies, was formed in 1950, following the outbreak of war in Korea, to serve young men and women in the Armed Forces, to .help defense communities establish their own health, welfare, recreation and planning services,; and to aid needy Koreans. Under the b&nner of UDF, t>e following six member agenciesare providing defense-related services: USO, which provides a "home away from home" for the servicemen and women and their families both in this country and overseas; United Community Defense Service* which works with local leaders in new communities: American Relief for Korea, which will seek to collect and process for shipment to Korea fifteen million pounds of clothing for the people of that wartorn country; American Social Hygiene association, which works with military office-s and various community groups to eliminate vjpe conditions in cities patronized by military personnel or ne-r defense projects; United Seamen's Service, which recently established a seamen's club in Casablanca, North Africa, a port jammed with defense shipping where no facilities were available to seamen on shore leave; and National Recreation association, which helps community and other recreation agencies and groups to welrome serviceman and their familiies into all the leisure time activities of their new communities so that - they feel at home. :z:z^r:z:: rs- Mine Safety Start bolting, now used instead of timbering in many modern eoaj mines, actually binds together the overhead layers of reek, thus mak tng them self-supporting.
