The pioneer is an advance agent of civilization and upon him depends the success of the future. If his cries. and complaints are heard by those who would like ' to forge their way into hew country, they will pause to consider the many disadvantages; but if his enthusiastic praises ring loud and true his voice will be ljeard and heed- . ed by many; Life was not easy for* the early settlers, in McHenry . county. There were forests to be cleared, prairies to be made productive; houses, schools, churches and roads had to be built before even the smallest degree of comfort could be attained. - In this county, pioneer life is within the memories of our older inhabitants. They have »?en almost unbelievable changes in their ways of life since those early days. When they ride along our streets and boulevards and see the beautiful homes that McHenry county now boasts, their mind's eye must also see the homes of the' early inhabitants. In order ttf " tide them over until they coAl huild their cabins or houses, the early settlers built what was known as "threefaced camps." These were hastily put up structures of three walls and a front opening. Thex were about 7 feet high with in> floors and foofs, made of bark or shingles supported by poles. There were no doors or windows nor any chimneys. 1 The first cabins built were of round logs with chips or sticks filling in betwetn logs. A log house was different from a cabin. It was built of hewn logs and frequently had no floor. The heat was provided by a huge fireplace built of stone and clay. The doors of these houses were of split shingles fastened with cleats and wooden pins. The latch and hinges were also of^ wood. The latch-string was of ' leather, extending through a hole In the door a few inches above the latch. A pull from the outside lifted the latch from the catch and enabled one to open the door from the outside. This probably gave rise to the expression "the latch-string is for the coming fifty-fourth International Live Stock Exposition were received from Ringwell Fariys. near Ringwood. and from Topsalo Farms, Spring Giove. "There's more to putting good eggs and poultry meat in the consumer's hands than most purebred Short- j people realize," Broadbent says, to. the Exposition, everyone who is interested in getting this story acrosS helps out at poultry day." In addition, the poultry days are calling attention to opportunities for producing and selling more quality eggs. Through a community approach they are designed to teach producers, tradespeople and consumers what it takes to produce and market high quality products. , There are. many areas in Illi- | nois. When an excess of .bile pigments is found, the • diagnosis of jaundice can be determined before being recognized clinically. This is important because, frequently, the discoloration does not appear for several weeks, permitting time for further damage to the liver. Other liver function tests may provide valuable information. Whenever jaundice is ^present, the patient must convalesce" carefully.
