Stratton reiterated at a press conference^ recently that he unalterably favors "free and open" primaries throughout Illinois and declared that the G.O.P. state central committee end the 0»ek Oewwtv Republican committee "should not endorse a slate of uandidates" in the 1054 primaries. "As far as I am concerned," he asserted in re-empftiaslsing his; policy toward primaries, "there is no such thing as an officially endorsed Republican primary ticket. The individual committeeman should be free to support the candidates of their choice." Governor Stratton told newsmen at the press conference in his statehouse office that "the, public interest will be better served with selection made possible from a wider field of candates running on their own merits." 1 "In other words," he said, ••the primary election should give the; voter an opportunity to have his wishes made known. Any other course amounts to a repudiation of the purpose for which the primary election law was enacted and ultimately results in the people being given little real choice in the general election."
