TIGERS 4 TO 3 Olio's Pitching and "Tony's" Big Bat Are Features ;*£he Crystal Lake Merchants rallied 'round their. big pitcher^ Wally Otto, last Sunday at "johnsburg to beat the Tigers 4 . to 3. ' j Otto walked the first two men to face him, then settled down to. a no-hit, no-run performance for five innings. Toomey struck out the side, in the second inning, the second and third batters going down with bats on their shoulders. The third inning was different •Schilling walked, stole second scored on Dale Feffer's hit to center. Feffer - stole second. Brettschneider drew a pass. Both runners scored on Plauck's double to left, a blow that caught the outfield swung around for a left handed hitter. The Merchants put across what proved to be the winning run in the fifth. Dobler smacked a three-bagger far and wide to center field and scored on Brettschneider's grounder. Pierce Brnks Ice While Otto was dishing out' ft few walks along the way, it wasn't until two wre out in the sixth that the Tigers got a hit. Pierce showed the way as he lined over short, Brettschneider went back and leaped for the ball, but it bounoed off his glove and on its way. Richard "Tony" Freund, the hitter of the day, followed Toomey's walk in the seventh with a three-bagger and slid under the relay which followed a loose ball on the throw-in. "Tony", who had two walks in addition to his hitting, led off the home ninth with another triple and scored on Bob Peisert's sacrifice fly to center field. That run served to put a tingle in the home crowd, but Crystal Lake went into the win column 4 to 3. C. L. Merchants (4) AB S H Dolber, RF D. Feffer, 2B Brettschneider, • Plauck, CF J. GREEN STREET McHENRY, ILL. EVERYTHING IN TMB WORLD jOF SPORTS How to let air in or keep children out of discarded iceboxes is the subject of a recent publication by the National Safety Council. The publication is being distributed to schools before the summer vacation period, and a stepped-up information campaign is underway to warn parents of the greater damage during the summer months. Citing an unofficial count of seventy-nine child deaths in the last five years, the Council details several methods for preventing suffocation in iceboxes, refrigerators, freezers and other airtight cabinets. A worn-out refrigerator should be disposed of to a junk dealer, but if that can't be done immediately, then -- .1. Remove the door. This is the safest way, since a chest especially may have a door or lid so heavy that a child could not open it even if unlatched. 2. Remove the latch stop. TTiis usually can be done easily by removing the screws from the plate. 3. Drill rows of holes in the cabinet sides and pry off the rubber gasket around the door. These methods, used together, will reduce the danger of suffocation in a refrigerator kept in use as a storage cabinet. GENOA T H E A T R E On Hwy. 12 in Genoa City FRI. & SAT. Thursday, May 20, 1954 If refrigerators are temporarily out of use while the owners wait to move them to another location, sell them, or paM- thdje on to relatives, then -- 1. Remove the latch stop, which can be easily replaced. 2. Turn the box with the do«P against the wall. Most boxes are too heavy for children to move. 3. Bind the door shut wttli wire or stout rope. 4. Padlock the door when &*. handle is so constructed. The Council points out tl^ft the hazard apparently Is Increasing as more and more outmoded refrigerators are being replaced. Twice as many deaths occurred In 1953 as In 1952. The average age of victims is 5 years, with the range from 2 to 12. FRI. & SAT.
