Opinions favoring supports increased substantially between Apt il, 1953, and January, 1954. . • ; The surveys were, .conducted by Iowa State college in cooperation with the Chicago Union Stock Yards, under a project initiated and financed by the stock yards company. Interviewers visited nearly 600 farms in collecting the opinion data. The number of farmers favoring supports for feed grains rose from 44 per cent to 68 per cent in the nine-month interim. In analyzing the opinion shift, it was reported that feed grain prices were comparatively stable during the period between the surveys. However, there . may have been a lag in farmers' reactions to the price declines that occurred earlier which caused opinions to shift in favor of supports. A majority of the farmers surveyed in January opposed price supports for hogs. However, 42 per cent favored supports in January while only 30 per cent were in favor nine months earlier. Aside from seasonal changes, hog prices reflected an upward trend during the period covered by tlhe surveys. The farmers who changed their views in favor of supports may have been concerned aibout the future when larger supplies are expected to reach the market. Farmers were evenly divided on the question of cattle price supports in January, 1954.
