That's the bustle team of the league. You have to work hard to beat them. There was a fair size crowd at the Shamrock game tast Sun- Siy. Looks like interest is pickg up. The team needs both M&ral and financial support with special emphasis on the latter tight now. .a "Sonny" Miller wondered if we would have anything to say about our White Sox this week. He may have been referring to their defeat at the hands of the Cubs. Or--come to think of it, somebody said our Go-Go boys Msited Cleveland recently. Here are th* standings in the county league: Algonquin Fox Lake Richmond McHenry <• ' Johnsburg C. L. Merchant* see how it all came about. Hugh Murphy had control trouble and it showed up early. Bob Klaus led off with a single. Leath rolled to second. George Jackson and Smith walked to fill the sacks. Murphy went to work like the Murphy of old and fanned the next two batters. Norm Britz was a surprise starter for Fox Lake and pitched good ball most of the way. McHenry scored a run in the second after two were out. Howard Knox doubled to right and scored on Paul Judson's single to left. It looked like trouble in the fourth for the home team, but only one run resulted. Smith and Harper walked. Koutney's intended sacrifice turned into a hit with bases loaded and no outs. Murphy knocked down Gerretsen's bounded and John Bolger raced in to pick it up and get the runner at first base. Smith scored on the play. There was more activity, but Klaus lined to John Bolger for the third out. Murphy scored the lead run in the fourth when an error, two wild pitches and Harry Stilling's single to left put him over. McHenry seemed to have put the game on ice in the seventh, but you haven't heard everything. Two runs did come across as Paul Judson led off with a two-bagger and Bill Bolger singled. Gerry Molidor's infield out scored Paul. "Sonny" Miller's double scored Bill. The "Micks" scored three more in the eighth that looXed unnecessary. That Fox Lake ninth was a dooey. Bob Klaus, who hit the ball hard all afternoon, led off with a two-bagger. Three bases on balls, a hit by Harper and an error that let in two runs put the game in a dangerous position (7 to 6). "Sonny" Miller finished it up for Murphy, getting Leath On a fly to Paul Judson. The McHenry Junior Ee^ion baseball team won their third straight start Sunday with a 6-5 win over Cary. Eon May was the winning pitcher after relieving Chick Sales in the fourth. Sales was "sailing" along with a 2-1 lead when he was forced to take over the catching duties in place of Charlie Olson, the regular catcher, who was slightly injured. Three double plays aided the McHenry pitchers. McHenry went ahead 2 to 1 in the second when Alan Leibsohn's hit scored the Olson brothers. Dick Olson scored on Bob Stromstedt's hit in the fourth. Chick Sales increased the McHenry lead to 5 to 1 when he singled home Gene Freund and Pete Bastian in the fifth. Cary didn't get a hit until the sixth inning when two hits scored two runs. The visitors tied the score after two were out in the seventh. Alan Leibsohn walked leading off the home seventh and moved to second on a wild pitch, from where he scored when an attempted pick-off went wild. McHenry plays at Crystal Lake next Sunday. Cardinal Manager Eddie Stanky stressed the importance of trial camps by relating that, "The Cardinals since S 1926 when they won their first pennant and World Series have been a first division ball club 24-years out of 28. "The reason," Stanky continued, " is that the Red Birds operate the finest minor league system in all Organized Baseball. The Cardinals have always, since they originated the idea of the farm system, brought more young players to the major league foftn any other organization. '"It goes to show any young player interested in making professional baseball a career that the Cardinals offer plenty of opportunity to him to succeed in his chosen profession. "Then too," Stanky said, "look at the large number of players who are playing major league ball with the Red Birds today who got their start in a tryout camp exactly like the one to be held in Elgin, 111. Harvey Haddix, Del Rice and A1 Schoendienst, to mention but three, are Cardinals Who signed their first contract as a result of a Red Bird trial camp!" They beat Bimbo's in a slugfest 20 to 17 and the following night beat Pa's Yanks 12 to 9. Seven runs in the first inning of each game sent the Sand & Gravel team on to well deserved victories. Hitting was shared by the entire team in both games. Blatz Beer beat the Knights of Columbus 18 to 10., For five innings the Knights were right in the game. Eleven runs, three in the fifth and eight in the sixth put the game away for the Blatz team. Joe McAndrews led Blatz in /hitting with four singles. Cuda, Thomas and Doran had three apiece. Walt Freund, Don Howard and Monte led the losers with three hits each. In the first game Tuesday night, Bimbo's beat Blatz Beer 12 to 10 in an extra inning ball game. Going into the last inning Blatz was leading 8 to 5. Bimbo's scored four runs on a home run by Morenze following a single by Harry Freund. A double by Jack Thomas and a single by Wiles brought the tying run to bat. .A fielder's choice ended the game as Freund grounded to short and Wiles was caught going to third. Like Tigers of old, they played great baseball to smother the invading Laka Forest nine 11 to 0. Fans came within one safe blow of seeing John Toomey pitch a no-hit game. E. Burns led off the sixth with the one safe blow off the big fellow, but was gobbled up in one of three fast double plays engineered by the Johnsburg- infield. Fitzgerald started on the mound for Lake Forest and was a tough cookie to handle for three innings. Fcpr example, in the first inning Bob Peisert (the hitter of the day) led off with a single to right. Howie Katz walked. What did Fitzgerald do but strike out the next three batters -- two of them swinging and one looking at third strikes. It was in the fourth that the issue was settled.' Barth led off with a pass. Lloyd Freund singled to left center and Barth moved to second. Huemann forced Barth at third. Dick Hiller fouled to the catcher. Tony Freund walked to fill the bases. Mind you, two were out at this point and nobody had scored. Up steps Toomey to the plate. He looked over a couple of pitches, then drove a long blow over the right fielder's head for a base-clearing double. Peisert followed with a triple to left and scored when third baseman Fitzgerald bobbled a bouncer by Katz. Charlie Hiller singled Katz to second. Barth came up for the second time in the inning and flied out to right j field. Southpaw Enters Lake Forest tried their lefthander, Reed, in the pitching department in the fifth and sixth. The Tigers failed to score in the fifth but gave one an idea of their# intentions. Tom Huemann singled. So did Dick Hiller. Tom went to third and Dick hustled to second on the throw-in. . If Wilex hadn't robbed Tony Freund with a grass-top catch in left, there is no telling what might have happened. Another low catch by center f Hlndle, lb fielder Neal kept Bob Peisert | Ro#lllg, 2b from a perfect day at bat as ho led off the sixth. Katz drew hto second walk and Charlie Hiller was plunked by , a pitched ball. Barth flew out to center. Lloyd Freund grounded to third and legged it all the way to third when the throw went past first baseman Hindle (he didn't stretch). Of course, Katz and Hiller scored. Huemann and Dick HUler walked. Tony Freund's single to center was good for two more runs. XR. Burns left his shortstop Post to do the pitching in the seventh and he took a 2-run Jolt with a smile, a single by Katz, tilple by Charlie Hiller and single by Barth did the trick. Well, that tells you how the Tiger runs scored and we've already told you how Lake Forest did not score -- Toomey's pitching and errorless support.
