Thursday, Septembn 30, McHENRY •V? ONLY TWO MAJOR POLITICAL PAHmS APPEAR ON BALLOT ItoRta By Marie Schaettgen Music Music is holding thfe spotlight in the American Legion auxiliary's 14,000 . local units during September, when the auxiliary's musical activities will ibe emphasized throughout the country, according to Mrs. Pearl Fietsch, music chairman -of -tire McHenry unit. Stimulating patriotic and religious. sentiment to every com-: munity is the auxiliary's objective in its music activities this year. Singing the patriotic songs of our country and the hymns of our churches helps to increase the strength needed for America's future. Ai our September meeting, the members heard reports from delegates tp various conventions. Christine Krinn gave a comprehensive report on the Department of Illinois convention held in Chicago, early in August. Minnie Green told us of her many interesting experiences as delegate to the national convention at Washington, D.C. Both reports were full of interest an<l information, not only on auxiliary affairs but on national and world affairs. It is .infinitely more enjoyable to hear of these activities directly from those who' attended the conventions than to read about them. At this meeting, Pat Nissen \yas elected first vice-president to succeed _ Miriam Miller, who reluctantly resigned because of ill health. Clara McAndrews was elected sergeant*at-arms to fill Pat Nissen's post. Delegates were nominated for t^e eleventh district convention to be held in the near future at Plainfield, 111. The members voted to increase the dues by twenty-five cents yearly, on recommendation of the executive iboard. This action was thought necessary because of the increased per capita donations *sd the Higher coat of operating in general. In order to, encourage members to pay dues on time it was voted to impose a twenty-five cent fine on those paying after Nov. 11, when the membership drive ends. Please send in your dues to Claire Seeber or Georgia Steuben and do come to the next meeting. You will be well rewarded, for the few hours thus spent. Dorothy Schroeder, who left McHenry a few years ago to join the armed forces, was a visitor to our unit at , this meeting. Dorothy is a member, however, so should- not really (be? classed as a visitor. She taught school in this vicinity before- joining the Air1 Force. NEW APPOIKiliVIEST-' ^ Joe B. Davidson of M&ntleello has resigned as superintendent of the game management division of the State Department of Conservation. Department Director Glen D. Palmer designated Assistant Director Lewis E. Martin to supervise division affairs until a suitable successor Can be ob-' tained. Several leading wildlife technicians are toeing considered for the post. Davidson, who plans to go into business for himself, has been associated with the department f0r about nine years. >V For the first time in eightytwo years since 1872 -- only two political parties will appear on, the ballot this year for the general election on Nov. 2, Secretary of State Chatles F. Carpentier said this week. Throughout that period there has always been at least one independent party listed, but in 1954 only the two major parties, Republican and Democratic, will present candidate Secretary Carpentier said. The list of names of parties which appeared in the past is almost. a cross-section of American history for the: last 100 yesus* Mr. Carpentier said. They include: American, Free Soil, Greenback, Independent Democrat, Liberal, Liberty, Peoples, Prohibition, Progressive, Socialist, Socialist Labor, Union, Union Progressive and Whig.
