Latest estimates indicate that today fire claims tile lives of some 3,000 youngsters under 14. A stiiSy of newspaper clippings of hundreds of fires shows an Manning number" of children -die trapped in burning homes.' Commenting:- op this fact, the National Boalrd of Fire Underwriters stressed the need for these important safety precautions: 1. Never leave children at home alone. Many news items mentioned that the children %ere alone in the house. Youngsters' ages usually ranged from a *ew months to 6 yearo. In some oases the older ones'had caused the fire, by playing with matched or some other dangerous act,., put whether the caitser or 6hly ihe victims, they died because, there was no one to save them. Parents who leave children at home alohe have only themselves to blame for such a tragedy. 2. Keep your home fire safe. Often the fires started at night when the family was asleep. Smoke and deadly gasses killed the children -- and sometimes the parents -- before the fire could warn I'hem. Only by eliminating the causes of home fires could this be prevented. 3. Teach children what to do in case of fire. Many young 'Victims were found huddled unde'f a bed or in a closet -- obviously having had no idea how to save themselves. If tfhey had hVen trained in periodic home .$ire drills, they might have heen able to escape. Show your children at least two ways to get out of the house from their bedrooms. Wake them up at night to practice this "drill"; they may need to remember the instructions when they are foggy with sleep. If a rope is needed to eret them out, provide a rope -- and show them how to use it. Be sure they know 'how to test a door before opening it in case of fire. They should £lace the palms of their hands against it; if it feels hot, the hallway is filled with deadly heated gases and the door should be kept shut. If it does not ieel hot, open it slightly, head turned away, door braced with foot. Pass one hand, across the opening to test heat of the air. If the hallway appears safe, it can be used'as an ekit. Twenty-Five Years Ago People in this vicinity will no doubt rejoice at the good news that work has been commenced and is progressing rapidly on the bridge across, the Chicago & North Western railroad tracks, east of Crystal Lake and south of Terra Cotta, on Rt. 61. This will mean the completion of the cement highway, Rt. 61, which was constructed last year with the exception of the detour point where the town line road is met. On Sunday, Oct. 6, a meeting was held at Salverson's place at Burton's Bridge,, where plans were made rac a permanent organization to look after the interests of property owners living south Df the flam in Fox river. The llaige' summer home of Ernest Oberg of Chicago, located in the John A. Miller subdivision, north of McHenry, near the Johnsburg bridge, burned to the ground Wednesday evening. Many who are interested in the boys of this community will be glad to know that the local Boy Scout troop has been reorganized. M. L. Schoenholtz, fifth grade teacher who is mn^h interested in the work, has been appointed' Scoutmaster, with Howard Ensign as his assistant Scoutmaster. Jacob Freund was elected chief ranger of St. Mary's Court, C.O.F., with Edward Sutton as Vice-chief anger. 1--*. > ' 1* 1' iff -Jp v. y. ?' rz - .t "i? - ' -i" ^ •*« - ' •" r - 1 Community Methodist Church of McHenry Main and Center Streets J.
