TALK The Feeling of Inadequacy - Most o£« us, at one time or {toother, have yielded to the feelfag of inadequacy. This is normal tyrought on by the #ver increas- tjtlg stress and strain of present 4ly living. Feeling of insufficiency, insecurity, incompleteness, incompetence, or even inferiority i#e accountable. A temporary lapse into^> this ihental state of self-pity is understandable, but when it persists beyond logical thinking, it looms high as a problem in mental health, the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society observes in a health talk. The causes of the feeling of inadequacy are numerous. Physical disease or defects may be the factors. Some deviation in normal structure of the body may be responsible .causing the person to feel inadequate Witi his associates. Lack of affection and security in childhood may create emotional involvement with the beginning Of the Speech developmental and pre-school period, during school life from kindergarten up. Home and social, life, business and office activities may be factors. Dissatisfaction .with our status, economically or socially, and inability to cope with needed adjustments to living and working conditions, play a role in the feeling of frustration. A person may be normal in self-confidence until mature years. Then, because of serious reverses,: losses, difficulties in work and .home, or development of situations which appear insurmountable, he loses his ability to adjust or think logically. The condition manifests itself in different ways. A paranoidal state may develop. The victim may labor under a feeling of persecution one minute and a delusion of grandiosity and personal self-esteem the next. Jealousy, hate, spite and depreciation of others are also characteristics. One manifestation is the wish to run away from reality, in other words, to forget it all and resort to inactivity, wishful daydreams, delusions and fantasy. How can we overcome this feeling of inadequacy? -First of all none of us should demand perfection. Persons with a feeling of superiority, exaggerated ego and self-esteem axe difficult to live, work or play with. A feeling of self-respect and equality is the happy medium. For this it is not necessary to be a braggert or a persistent self-publicity seeker. On the other hand, neither should we hide our light under the proverbial bushel. Avoid excessive self-consciousness and oversuspiciousness of remarks and actions of others is helpful. In overcoming defects or handicaps, one should also avoid the extremes of overcompensation, such as excessive selfassertion, over aggressiveness, cruelty, unscrupulousness and boastfulness. Remember that we need to a certain degree the feeling of inadequacy and inferiority. We need to know our own limitations. It has been said that the great are the most humble. Planning our lives along the lines of legitimate ambition is essential. A desire to improve one's status, in business and social life, is commendable. Use well directed thinking to improve jtourself and yoyr family, but don't let envy and greed become factors in your ambition.
