TOE am1 'AC" • The trophy case in the Buss Motors office is getting crowded. The latest addition \ is evidence that their team woa first place in the county bowling tournament ait Crystal Lake. This week you will find various schedules on the sport page pertaining to high school athletic programs. We hope you will clip them for future reference. The first competition to get under way will be varsity baseball. Warren High, champion of 1954, Will be here next Tuesday, April 5, with another strong team. The game will, teplayed on Hie city diamond, starting at 4:15 pan. Coach McOracken will have to come up with many new faces in Ms lineup this year and may have his greatest problem in the pitching department. Wally Fratt Is feci for mound duty and can do a real good job. But, last year Wally combined efforts with Loren Freund and Harold Schmitt. Theme seems to be no replacements for those fellows. x • Cbick Sales has pitched in Legion ball and may be just the fellow to step in and fill ttoe bill. With Melvtn Freund doing the catching, that position should be Of little worry. This should be a good year for MeJvin. John Huff and Bill Huemarai Ire a couple of returning inflelders who should handle .the Hood hops and bad hops without tbo much trouble. : In the outfield, Tom Oeffling #ems to be the only regular returning. This leaves quite a few positions wide open for fellows who can deliver. Let's hope for sunshine and get down to the diamond Tuesday to help the team get off to i good start. The Vice President in charge tit high bowling scores points out a couple of good ones for In week: W. Low, 223-235-181- 639; Hojn&cki, 258. You have to Stay i^ht^wtth tyoup aXxS&m and spaires to £et (those kind of fcomes. At this wailing there seems to only seven teams entered in the county basketball league. Let's make it eigiht. f The two .teams at Crystal Lake be back, so will old stamdbys Johnsburg, Algonquin, Fox Richmond and McHenry. hear no action from Woodiftock. Hebron is a possibility. , "County league baseball has been good for the various teams (Inhered. The league has prosait times and hung on the at other times. But, there fellows throughout the circ^ j&t who are willing to take the Work and the raps tlhat go with tjhe game. They love the sport of paying baseball and making it possible for others to do the <pme. Man: "Is it a modem ffann house?" | Real Estate Agent (Glenn Draper): No -- just five rooms find a path." ILLINOIS AND WISCONSIN STUDY NORTHERN PKE Tests Pertain To . Fox River And The Fox Chain OXakes In an effort to improve fishing through sound research, the conservation departments of Illinois and Wisconsin are jointly conducting a study of northern pike in the Fox river system of the two states. Fisheries "tyoioglsts of the neighboring states will tag 1,000 northerns during the next several months and, at the same time, conduct a number of tests which they hope will reveal information valuable in determining the proper management of the popular species of fish which is sought not only in the Fox rivari itself, but in all of the nine lakes which form the Fox Chain 6' Lakes. All of the trapping will be done below the dam at Wilmot just south of the Wisconsin border, according to Sam A. Parr, superintendent of fisheries for the Illinois department, who : announced the project (recently. Parr has assigned biologist Maurice Whitaere to supervise the job for Illinois. B. L. Jacob will be in charge of the work for Wisconsin. Both 'states will assign other technicians to assist these two as needed in manning the traps on alternate days. As the fisn ane tagged, they will be weighed and measured; age will be determined by scale samples and the ratio of males to females on the spawning run will be determined. A separate record will be kept on each of the tagged fish. Fishermen are being asked to watch for the tags and urged to send them to the Division of Fisheries of either state department. Only through cooperation of .the anglers will the project prove to be valuable, it was pointed out by the Illinois fisheries leadfer. "Wisconsin has been tagging northerns in the Fox above Wilmot for several years," Parr explained./ "For some reason, most of the returned tags came from Illinois fishermen. This fact, and the desire to do a better management job prompted the two states 4©join % this project. ' The-season on northern pike in Illinois is closed now but will be opened May 1. There is a creel limit of eight on this fighting game fish, and it also is one of the few varieties on which Illinois still enforces a size limit -- 16 inches. HETTERMANN, Secretary of School District No. 12 $ Knowing that our editor, "Brenda," would be too modest to repont a fine build-up she received this month in the IAA Reoard, Chuck Weingart brought Us a copy of the April issue. Last month the magazine reported on the award won by Adele for an editorial. You heard about tlhat. But, now comes quite a follow up on this busy gal's many interests and ac tivities. "The Lady's An Editor" is the title to their story. One of the piotures shows our editor making up a page with Bill Moore, shop foreman. And .that's no fluke! She is the only lady editor not afraid to get her hands smeared with printers' Ink. The Record caroled a real nice story. Thanks. We liked it.
