v- THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER %tit' 'l 'Va*'-'-*'-*-* €*ihj£. WO&ASL. C(i AjP- awcoHTl Sad Sam Jones, sgjnetimea known as the Emporer,* had just finished pitching that now famous no-hiit game when we toured up Green street and saw thvee Cub fans right out on the sidewalk where everybody could see tt'ieir broad smiles. Holger Pede<rsen, George Justen and Otto Pyritz were the three Cub fans who had come out of hiding to teH . ithe world about the great game. Huppy Smith came out to tell us about a trip to Milwaukee the day before and from the group we -learned that they had taken "Muggs" with them to see the Braves. ' Only hd'tch was that "Wrong Way" Wattles was about an hour's distance out of McHenry before he discovered that he wasn't headed for Wrigley Field. They shouldn't get that kid so confused. LeRoy Smith was wondering about this epedemic of no-hit games by high school pitchers this year. We feel that you lhave to be sharp or lucky or both to pitch a no-hitter in any league, but 'twould seem that high school hitters, need more practice with a bat in hand. That was quite & ball game last Sunday as the Shamrocks beat Johnsburg in twelve innings. Everything happened. John Knox was spiiked and had to leave the game. Next thing we knew, the Shamrocks had Richard "Tony" Freuntd trapped and ran him toward home plate instead of back to third. In the mixup, Sonny Miller was on the bottom of the pile with a twisted leg. More of the old time rivalry cropped up in this game and tfce fans were quick to get into the act. Maybe that is just what baseball needs to bring out the <S|»wds. ]McHenry's defense had some slips showing. A few things we observed were dlat: Howard Knox, can really fire that ball in from center field. Howie Freund is still a lot of ball player. A1 Bockman ill going to be a big help to the Shamrocks. Coach Bill Chesbrough of Elgin is going to conduct a three week sport camp at EJign, starting June 20. Boys and girls who want information can contact tfie coach at 802 Douglas Ave., Ellgin. WHO SAID IT FIRST? When we were kids' ten cents was really big money. Wow! How dimes have changed! They say a woman likes a man to be tall, dark and have some. America is the ontly place in the world where a man can drive yp in his own car to collect his unemployment check. The Shamrocks have an open dkte next Sunday so have a game scheduled. witJfo Lake Forest to be played here. They say Lake Forest has class. They packed the hall last Thursday night for the Little League meeting at the V.F.W. Guy Bush was present. as scheduled and gave the boys 60me good, constructive advice oh their conduct and the benefits to be derived from competition in baseball. A few choice stories in t'.iat old Mississippi drawl went over big with the (teds, too. AND WITH By Jimmy Kupec SHAMROCKS WM 12 INNING GAME FROM JOHNSBURG Stilling Drives In Winning Run; A1 Bockman Stars Guy promised to come back When the new field is ready for the grand,, opening and may be able to bfing another well-known Wg 'leaguer with him. -. We hope to have a complete story on the league next week. At this time we are asked to report that any boy Who reaches the age of 13 years before August 1st will not be eligible for this league. TAose boys should try out with the American Legion group. 'Next Sunday it is Crystal Lake Boosters at Johnsburg in the county league. DAILY PIN-UPS: Peopde with a round the clock schedule sometimes go around ili' circles. ' .Lover's knots tied with a single beau 'last the longest. 'Calling a shade a abode can lie a thair-splitting decision. Purpose makes the difference, the motive Is what counts. Anonymous. I Someone suggested that I f explain pars, birdies, etc. So to those who are not familiar with these expressions, I hope I can explain their definitions. Par is thS number of strokes required for a hole or a round of golf played perfectly. Yardage is used to determine par. On a short par three hole, the yardage used is from "l to 250 yards inclusive. If you had a five on a par three hole, you 'had a double bogey, a four is a bogey, three is par, two is a birdie, and a hole in one is an ace. A par four hale, the yardage is 251 to 445 inclusive. Six is double bogie, five a bogey, four is par, three a birdie and two is an eagle. A hole in one is an ace on any hole. A par five hole is from 446 to 600 yards inclusive. Seven is a double bogey, six a bogey, five is par, four a birdie, three an eagile, two is a double eagle. All holes are measured from the center of the tee area to the center of the green. By the way. on a few occasions there are par sixes from 601 yards and pver. Par for eigfnteen holes ranges from 69 to 74 and 72 is standard. Using a par 72 for example, a pro shot 4 under par, so he had a 68 or four over for a 76. The tip on golf this week from Julie Goffo, pro at McHenry GC, is on sand trap shots, that add so many strokes to your game anidi is the easiest golf shot of all to master. The proper way to do this (providing the ball is not buried), is to use a slightly open stance, select a spot approximately 1% to 2 inches behind the ball and swing at the spot in slow motion. By doing tfhis in a slow manner, your chances of moving your head are slim, enabling you to hit through the spot behind the ball 'that you have selected. Ask Julie for a demonstration and he will gladly oblige. The winners at McHenry CC in the tow net events" were: Class A, 1-7, Earle Seepe first with a 68, *Bd Ed Buss, hg)$- a 69. Class B, 8-13, Ralph Bennett came in with a 66 for top money and Jci'ioi Varese was second with a 68. Class C, 14 and up, Lennie Antonson was first with 67, and "Dollar" Bill Bacon was second with a 73. In the Peoria event, Warren Kuhlman and Emil Simon tied for first and second with 64s. Next Sunday starts the qualifying round for the Directors Trophy tournament, that begins June 5, and low net event for the three groups. The winners of May 10 for best score on even holes in the ladies' division were Emily Hester and Millie Bollman in Class A. The Class B winner was Beverly Rourke, and Class D, Mildred Hinspater and Evelyn Hans. May 24 the Ringer tournament will begin and a special event of low score on the odd holes is scheduled. On Sunday, May 22, a mixed two-bail foursome is planned for members anid wives. At Chapel Hill Sunday, the nine 'hole Blind Bogey was won by Sam Spratt. The low net was E. Ohisen 43-4-39. Stanley Pankman, Chapel Hill's new golf pro, was introduced to the members and guests over the weekend. Wish Stan a lot of luck. At Pistakee Golf club, Dick Smith had a 51-56, Bob Kilday 46-54, Frank Low would not reveal his score. Another threesome had M. Foley 53, Dick Lasee 54, and Maurice Wade 41. Bill Malpecte has a list of names started for his twi-ligCit league, which starts the first Thursday in June. On June 1, the Pistakee ladies day will start at 9:30 a.m. Glad to here your dad is feeling better, Bill, and will be home this week. The McHenry high school golf team, coached by Chuck Cuda, traveled to Crystal Lake Thursday and came home a disappointed group of boys. Ti'.iey .lost their match lOVi to 4 V2. D. Kent came through with a 92, .Cepulus had a 98, Art Deck 97, B. Useman 104 and J. Just en 104. Friday Libert yvilie paid our Warriors a visit and our boys took the liberty of beating them 10 V2 to 4V2. Cepulis' partner didn't show, so the match was forfeited. His score was 94. Art Deck won his match with a 97, J. Justen also won his with a 98, B. Useman tied his man witi.i a 105 and D. Kent lost to his partner with a 104. Goad work against Libertyvilie, boys. Let's see more of it. In regards to the Conference Golf tournament Monday, McHenry ran into* more tough luck and lost. The county league baseball season opened last Sunday and the Johnsburg Tigers came to McHenry to play the Shamrocks. Wotta game! Everything happened as McHenry took the decision 9 to 8 in twelve innings. Might as well start this story at the finish antt tell you that Harry Stilling's hard smash to left center sent Bee knell across with the winner. Now we can go back to. the beginning and pick up tlhe high spots. Willie Klapperich and Sonny Miller were the opposing moundismen at the start, but both were out of the picture before the finish. Willie, had control trouble in the first inning. Bockman led off the second-with a triple and, when two more hits and a walk followed, Manager Frett called in John Toomey. Big John went Into the last of the nintfii with a 2-run lead and a sore arm. Wally Frett took over and walked Rob Weber to force in a run. He set Jack Molidor down swinging, but walked) Bee knell to force in the tying run. Art Jackson, who is staging a comeback, was called in from center field tp finish. He slipped a third strike past Red Olsen on a 3-2 count to end the inning and went on real well until the twelfth when Becknell scratched a hit, stole second and scored on Harry Stilling's game-ending blow. Miller pitched gooidl ball and had a 5 to 4 lead going into the eighth in spite of some infield play tjiat was less than dazzling. Sonny was shaken up and had to leave the game in .the eighth when Gerry Molidor chased Richard Freund toward the plate on a run-down anidl a grand pile-up resulted. A1 Bockman finished and was the surprise of the day with a fast ball that kept the situation in hand. He makes a good target as a first-baseman, but also looks like a good man to lhave around when help Is needed on the moun d Shamrocks (9) AB R H R. Weber 5 0 1 J. Knox, ss 2 1 1 Becknell, rf 4 1 1 S. News of McHenry Speedettes If spring workouts ore any indication of what a team will look like or do in the coming' season, than it is predicted thait McHenry will have one Of the finest girls' amateur teams in Illinois. The girls are .talented and eager. Some of last year's McHenry girls have improved be-, yorid expectations and wiU' be "regulars" this year. The team also has been strengthened in the hitting department. Two new pitchers have been added, one o£ wi'-.om has just come to the stated from Canada. $ It is interesting to note that though there are three or more Chicago softbail teams, new comers all seek to join the McHenry Speedettes despite " the rigid rules of conduct layed down and practiced by our girls. The new local girls trying out this year show promise of- becoming good ball players after a year of seasoning. •>. Next Saturday will be our,; last practice session. The hardest jtasfc* for the coach, of course, is taP •decide and choose the nineteejt girls wt':o will remain with thflj1- team. This will have to be dorife by next Saturday.
