Proceeds of the dance will go toward paying expenses of runfiing the ball dub. And bats, balk, umpires and what, have you cost a neat sum these. days. They always have a heck of a lot of fun at those baseball dances. Don't miss this one. Manager Joe also sent word that Dundee will appear on tine Johnsburg diamond next Sunday. We presume the Tigers will also appear in spite of the big dance the night before. Suppose you read about Terry Britz pitching his third no-Miter for St. Mary's of Woodstock. Terry is a long-geared fellow who can reach half way to the plate. Better keep an eye on'.that boy, We have groups of run into several sports fans who drifted into thoughts of Leo Stilling. It doesn't take long to realize that the boys liked Leo and miss him more as time goes Oil. Our dear editor, "Brenda," and yours truly had a most interesting' letter from Richard B. "Dick" Walsh this week. Of course, our editor is much too young to remember baseball history as Dick brought it all the way down memory lane, but your sports department could follow back most of the way. We couldn't remember days when EcDcfte Whiting and Jake ^ Buss were star pitchers (nor & could we recall Pete Just en as a . flashy shortstop. A? We are sure tihat "Brenda" picked out some of the items so will wait and review that nice, long letter. One thing about Diek -- if he can't say anything good about t his old friends, he says nothing at all. ^ That pftwer packed AlgonquS) J, nine will be iiefre next Sunday to • play the Shamrooks. LITTLE LEAGUE IS IN FULL SWING AS 250 BOYS REGISTER MeHenry's Little League baseball organization is in full ateam ahead. Officers elected are Fred Meyers, president; LeRoy Smith, vice-president; Bill Bolger, Secretary; Dick Hester, treasurer. Over 250 boys have registered to play in tfae local group. That means a lot of help Is needled. The encouraging part is that many former baseball players are taking the time to work with the boys. Teams were selected on Wednesday night of this week. Six major league teams, the maximum allowed under league rules, have been selected. The remainder will be in the minors, but every boy will have a chance to play. The first practice will be on Friday night of this week. Parents and boys are asked to watch for news in tihe Plaindealer and notices through the schools regarding activities. Little League baseball offers a rare opportunity to the neighborhood or the local community to By Jimmy Rupee Bill 684 was introduced to the Elinois Senate on May 17 and it concerns the youth of our town. This bill is the most important proposal in golf history. It would exclude caddies from the provisions of the present Illinois child labor laws. Under the present law, boys cannot caddie before they are 14 and require a working permit until <they are sixteen. There never can be commercial taint attached to Little League. Its principal objective is for the good of the boys between 8 andjj 12 who play baseball on Little League teams. Contagious Enthusiasm Little League is a program of contagious enthusiasm. It is based upon an appreciation and understanding of the needs of youth. It is carried on locally by adult volunteers who (deserve high commendation and recognition for their efforts. In Little League each boy learns some of the lessons of fair play, of discipline, of team work. He finds that the otlher boys, regardless of race, creed or color, strive for the same common goals, and this kind of thinking spreads--from the boys to their families and thus to the communities. From the ranks of these hundreds of thousands of boys who jtattd now on the morning side of the hill undoubtedly will come all of the great ball players of tftie future. For Little League is the basic platform under all of baseball. However this is no part of the main goal. Properly operated on the local level, Little League baseball will speak for itself as a great democratic youth movement which builds character in American boys.
