They put their camping gear and members in two canoes at Marengo and paddled the extremely rough and hazardous course down the river many turning, twisting miles through heavy woods to the district camp grounds. Many of the canoes of ortiier crews anld poets were overturned on tltoe way down but the Fox river-raised members of Crew 162 came through safe and dry. After capping over night in the rain, Explorers John Miller and Jim Kirk tried out a brand new all aluminum canoe in a long trip further down and close to Garden Prairie. It required four portages each way. At the end of the encampment, all attending Explorers received a patch which haid been designed by Mr. Kirk a maratlh before at the Explorer Olympics. HARDEST BUSIEST CHEAPEST WORKERS LN TOWN PLAINDEALER WANT ADS FOR SALE DRI - ICE RAY'S D-X Service Route 12 Fox Lake, III Opening Soon Quick Service Laundry Next to A&P Store ELM STREET The All-America "Oscar," horticulture's highest award, goes to only one rose, "Circus," for 1956. As the lone winner of the coveted title, "Circus" is expected to be in great demand all over the country. "Circue," a floribnnda, is the first multi-color to win All-America recognition. It is the 43rd rose to be added to horticulture's Royal Family since the first A.AJR.S. winners were announced fifteen years ago. Development of a championship rose takes about eight years, culminating in the two-year AA.R.S. testing program* On the basis of its actual performance in special gardens located in different sections of the United States, "Circus" was adjudged the best of the new roses developed in this country and abroad. "Circus" will bring endless variety to the rose garden. Its colors change from a rich yellow and red in the bud to buff-orange, apple blossom pink and red in the open flower. It is well raited for a number of garden uses such as hedges, mass plantings, border edgings and formal beds. Large, glossy foliage gives a well-groomed appearance between flowering periods. Something of the colorful gaiety and excitement of the Big Top will be introduced to the garden with the advent of "Circus." It will be available from leading nurserymen in the fall of 1955. The Memorial Day Toll (an editorial) Speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road and recklessness will cause 319 deaths of a predicted nation-wide total of 425 highway accident fatalities during the three-day Memorial Day weekend starting Friday night, according to the prediction of the Association of Casualty & Insurance companies Traffic accidents will also claim thirty-one lives in Illinois, says the Chicago Motor club, basing their statement on past experience." Excessive speed is expected to be the number one'killer, taking a toll of 170 lives. Eighty-five more persons will meet death as a result of driving on the wrong side of the road and another sixty-four will djie because of recklessness. Other major factors, according to the insurance companies, will be failure to yield the right of way, which will account for forty-three lives, and sleeping at tlie wheel, which will take twenty-five. Miscellaneous causes will kill the final thirty-eight of the predicted 425 total. Approximately one-fourth of the drivers -who are involved in fatal accidents or pedestrians who arc killed will have been drinking. Most smashups will take place on straight, dry roads and almost half of all fatalities will occur in broad daylight, continues the insurance companies prediction. Driving at a safe speed, alone, can cut the toll almost twothirds, said a spokesman for the companies, for in a 65-mile-anhour accident, death comes to one out of every six persons while in a 40-mile-an-hour accident, the ratio is reduced to one out of every 16. It is our sincere hope that Tuesday morning will not find any McHenry residents among these "statistics."
