Hayfever Exhibit Attracts Many To Museum Of Science-Industry A timely exhibit on hayfever is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry and will be shown through September, t)ie height of the hayfever season.,. The exhibit was prepared by Oren C. Durham, chairman of the Pollen Survey committee, Council on Aeroallergens of the American Academy of Allergy and chief botanist, Abbott Laboratories. The exhibit shows the various types of grasses and weeds producing the irritating pollen that causes hayfever. One out of twenty people is allergic to ragweed pollen which in three varieties is found prevalent in the eastern half of the United States. - An enlarged model of a single ragweed pollen, approximately 75,000 times actual size, is shown in the exhibit. It looks like & ball about six inches in diameter with long spikes and looks a good deal like the mines used in naval warfare. The irritation from this pollen is not caused by the spikes, however, but by the soluble content of the cell which produces the familiar symptoms -- sneezing, itching, and stuffy, running nose in people who are allergic. Shown alongside this giant coded of a pollen is a tube containing one ounce of ragweed pollen, approximately five hundred million separate grains, any one of which is sufficient to cause a visible skin reaction or reddened eyes. How skin tests determine the degree of sensitivity of a person allergic to such pollen is also shown in the exhibit. ' Large maps of the United States showing the principal zones where the various kinds of pollen causing hayfever are also displayed. Chicagoand Illinois reaches its highest pollination in late August and early September! Hayfever sufferers may prevent, escape or minimize their problem by moving out of high pollen areas during the hayfever season, by having the air they breathe completely filtered, or by getting immunizing injections of pollen extract from a qualified physician.
