The conservation area, started early in 1954 at the suggestion of Gov. William G. Stratton, is a 40-acre model of ideal conservation practices. It was carved from a formerly unused section as a joint venture of the state Departments of Conservation and Agriculture. Not only will the area be open to public inspection during the ten days of the state fair, but it will be an all-year exhibit -- a permanent improvement to the grounds. Roughly bisected by a winding, gravel road, the demonstration area contains three ponds stocked with ducks, geese and other species of waterfowl common to Illinois. Pens containing bison, elk and deer are fenced off as part of each pond area. Small game, birds and predatory creatures native to Illinois will toe caged in an exhibit near the area entrance. Adjacent to thiB exhibit a miniature forest nursery and a demonstration area for the raising of quail and pheasants will be set up. Gov. Stratton has invited every citizen of Illinois to visit the area and learn, first hand, what good conservation practices can do to preserve the wealth of natural beauty possessed by the state. "This area offers concrete evidence of what can and should be done to preserve the beauty of Illinois," the governor said. "I urge everyone to visit this educational exhibit," Last year the American people gave at an average rate of $163 per minute in support of the many Red Cross service programs to civilians, servicemen and vet- Saturday is the most dangerous day of the week to drive.
