'Thursday, August 11,19SS THE McHENRY PLAI1TOEALEH McCullom Lake News By Eve Leresqoe Election of officers for the coming year of the Cullom-Knoll Association was held last Sunday at the beach. Arthur Stuhlfeier was unanimously1 elected president. Serving with him will be Chester Sheriff, vice-president, and George McOuat as secretary. Mrs. Betty Poledna will again resume the duties of treasurer. Let us pledge wholehearted cooperation and wish our new officers every success. Four trustees will reniain in office until next year. fThoy are t^e Sawdo, George Cable, Bob mith and Chester' Hard. At the meeting, an appropriation was made to provide six swings for the small fry of the Village. Ken Ebey, Jr., has promised to furnish all necessary labor to properly install the swings. Posting of a curfew on the beach was taken under advise^ ment and will be brought to *£Ke attention of the village board. Attention Bowlers For women only, may we add. Mrs. Barbara Brand would like forty women to form a new bowling league from the lake. Age is no handicap. The league starts Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Johnsburg bowling alleys, the time being 9 p.m. For further information, contact Mrs Brand at 692-M-2. Speeding Miss Mildred Winkel of Wonder Lake was fined Saturday night on a charge of speeding by Police Magistrate Victor Howe. Miss Winkel commented on' the courteous treatment accorded her <by police officers. California Visitors Betty and Henry Houck were ^thrilled with a visit from their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Bell, of San Jose, Calif., last week. Beverly and Jim were caught up in a round of activities which included seeing many of their old friends. The Bellfe returned to California to rest up from their hectic vacation. * Flarewell Party The new 'teen-age club held a farewell party for one of their charter members last week. Miss Inge Scholz was the guest of honor. The young ladies and. gentlemen tripped the light fantastic and worked up an appetite for the tempting refreshments. We were sorry to see the Gcholz family leave for they were truly a credit to the community. Home From Sweden Welcome home to Florence and | Lee Larson after their five-week | trip through their native Sweden. ; They were awed by the scenic • beauty of the north country and, ] of course, they spent much time visiting their many friends and relatives. The Larsons brought back many beautiful mementoes which will keep the memory of their trip in their minds for a long time to come. Touchy Subject Our police force has been deluged with' complaints of all kinds from dogs to disturbances on the beach. Complaining is one thing, and backing it up is quite another. No action can be taken by our policemen without a written complaint. A word to the wise should be sufficient. Young Lad of Seven Master Jeffry Levesque hosted a party for his small friends yesterday, Aug. 10. The youngsters who serenaded him were Sandy and Linda Passalaqua, Bernice and Diane Bjork, Lynne Schultz, sisters Chryssie and, Dierdre, Jimmy , and Kenny Frost, Teddy Olsen, Mark Hansen, Geoffrey Houck and Arthur Schultz. Games, prizes and refreshments entertained the small fry for the afternoon. I Softball Notes A terrific victory was scored by our Wildcats when they tangled with Lakemoor last Friday night. They snowed the opposition under by a score of 8-4. The old duffers finally did it! They trampled Tim O'Meara's boys from Chicago to the tune of 5-3 last Sunday at McDonald's field. Giving their all for our side were Bill Brennan, Ray Deskis, Bob Brennan, Ray Blake, Lou Scholz, Russ and Milt Lawrence, Chuck andi Ken Ingersol, Bill Pagett and Ray Aalto. Bonnie Egerstaffer did a fine job as umpire. The "boys'" enjoyed their moment of victory. Prize Winner Frank Passalaqua's brother, Joe, of Libertyville, made a fine showing in the Marine Day parade with his 1913 Ford with the caption "Old soldiers never die." He was one of the first prize winners. Linda and Sandy Passalaqua contributed to the float in their old fashioned costumes. CARPENTIER Sccrctjry of State An added hazard to summertime driving is the. motorist who is. in a hurry to get to or from a vacation spot--regardless of the safety of others. Sometimes, this type of driver will be wantonly reckless. Other times, there will be no malicious thinking on the part of this type of driver, just a thoughtless desire to get ahead of every other driver at any cost. This type of driver is split into & number of categories. The worst iHi 1 I offenders are sometimes known as "in-and-outers." This type swings sharply into the lane of traffic carrying vehicles going in the opposite direction. In doing so, he will almost brush the left rear fender of the car he is passing. After passing, he will again swerve sharply, this time back into the right lane barely missing the left front fender of the vehicle he has just passed. Throughout the entire maneuver, he has neglected to make sure there was ample time in which to pass the other vehicle. Such drivers are either unaware of or neglect to obey the Illinois law which requires a motorist be back in the right hand lane before coming within 100 feet of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. What Mr. Gibbs doesn't 'know about farming isn't worth knowing and he has every reason tx) feel proud of his 1915 crops. Who can beat it? Items of Local Interest-- The people of McHenry were forced to bite a lot of dust last Sunday. The local factory is now receiving pickles. Although the weather has been anything but favorable for a big crop, the local factory hopes to take in their usual amount before the season comes to a close. Wins Re-nominatiori-- Friends here will be happy to learn of the continued progress of J. Alb in Anderson in his, political endeavors in the east. On Tuesday of this week he won, the Republican re-nomination in fthe primaries for the Springfield, Mass., mayoralty. He defeated his opponent by a 4 to 1 majority. Thought For The Week-- "As long as nations meet on the fields of war -- as long as they sustain the relations of savages to each other --- as long as they put the laurel and the oak on the brows of those who kill -- just so long will citizens resort to violence, and the quarrels be settled by dagger and .revolver." --Robert G. Ingersoll. Along with the cooler weather which arrived this week, the sight of footballs is a timely reminder that the summer season is closing fast.
