Notices have gone out to prospects for our high school football team. That's a sure sign that summer is on its last legs. The Little League schedule has been completed. Dick Herdrich has written a final story for us this week. Read it. We hope to have Dick with us for more 6ports reporting. The county league schedule has run its course, but a couple of tie situations call for untangling games next Sunday. McHenry plays the Tigers at Johnsburg. Now, this could turn into one of those good, old time battles. The teams will be scrapping for second place. Note to Hank Hiller -- Save a spot for us in your press coop. This game we want to see. There are many reports out about changes in the state game codes, but we are holding fire until we see. an official release from the Department of Conservation. N, We have an outdoor sportsman interested in writing that column on fishing, hunting, trapping and all that goes with the great outdoors. Hope to get him into action real soon. The St. Pat boys are all smiles these days since winning the championship in the Kiwanis league. A tie game was replayed and St. Patrick's team defeated McCullom Lake 9 to 5. The boys tell us that the" only game they lost this year was to Wonder Lake. George Worts took a load of baseball "ans in his bus to see the Cubs beat the Sox Monday night. It wasn't a pleasant ride home for the Sox fans. We can't believe it, but the story goes that' Eddie Buss, Jr., did not utter a word all the way home. After many, many years of competition, our "Brenda" is still winning tennis tournaments. She_.teamed up with Jack Colby of Crystal I^ake to retain chamr. pionship standing in the Waukegan tournament the past week. We went down to help John Dreymiller doctor some of his sickly flowers the other night, but our advice was wasted. From the looks of some of those flowers, he must have treated them with some of that "Buno" that he used to splash on our now bald head. PFANNENSTILL RITES HELD IN McHENRY TUESDAY MORNING Mrs. Mary Pfannenstill, 83, a former resident of the Ringwood vicinity, died at Memorial hospital on Saturday. She had lived at Ringwood until moving to Woodstock eight years ago. The deceased was born in Wauconda April 8. 1872, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Scheid. Her husband, John, and a son, Arthur, preceded her in death. She leaves two sons, Edward of McHenry and William of Woodstock; two daughters, Mrs. Carl Ohrwall and Mrs. William Boehmke, both of Crystal Lake; eight grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; a brother and two Bisters. The body rested at the George Justen & Son funeral home until 9:30 Tuesday morning, when rites were conducted from St. Mary's church, with interment in the church cemetery. Reid pitched a 3 hitter. * Oriole® beat the Bluebirds 9-6. Cards beat the Orioles 4-2. Reid pitched a no-hitter. Bluebirds trounced the Eagles 18-1. Geinosky pitched a two hitter. Orioles beat the Owls 10-8 Herdrich's two run homer provided the margin of victory. Minors Cards beat the Falcons 7-5. Fine pitching by Ambrose, Baur and Justen. Orioles topped the Owls 14-3. Orioles scored 14 runs on 2 hits. Cards beat the Bluebirds 15-9. Bluebirds tied the score at 15-15 but the game was called after the half inning and the score reverted to 15-9. Bluebirds beat the Eagles 9-5. Funk pitched a one hitter. In a play-off for first place, the Cards came up with 9 runs in the last inning to sneak past the Orioles 17-16. AIR TOUR More than 100 planes are expected to take part in the 1955 Illinois Air Tour from Herrin to Ojibwa, Wis.. Sept. 9 to 11, according to Arthur E. Abney, director of the state Department of Aeronautics. The tour, open to all Illinois pilots, will serve as the annual state-wide meeting of business and private pilots and as a test of their proficiency in civil defense activities. The tour is being sponsored by the Department of Aeronautics, the Illinois Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Flying Farmers, the central Illinois chapter of the 99's (an organization of women pilots), the Civil Air Patrol and the University of Illinois Institute of Aviation. It was a close game until the seventh inning when Bimbo's scored 8 runs. Leading hitters in the game were C. Fulton, 3 for 4, and J. McAndrews, 3 for' 5. For Sand 6 Gravel, D. Marsh led with 2 for 3. The final score was 14 to 2 and the winning pitcher was H. Thomas and the loser was R. Kilday. In the second game Hettermann's Tavern lost their fourth game in a row, "this time to 7th place McHenry V.F.W. by a score of 12 to 2. V.F.W. got off to a good start in the first and second innings, scoring 8 inns on 7 hits. The only scoring dorie by Hettermann's was home I'un's by P. Bruhn and S. Meyer, who also led the team in hitting with 3 for 3. Leading hitters for V.F.W. were L. Jenson with 4 for 4 and Dick Osterby with 2 for 3. The winning pitcher was Don Lorch and the loser was P. Bruhn. The first game Thursday was won easily by Old Bridge Tavern over Wonder Lake by a score of 22 to 4. J. Wfegener, P. Freund, J. Kennebeck, H. Nye, J. Knox and B. Miller all had home runs for Old Bridge. The leading hitters for Wonder Lake were Fiala, 2 for 2, and Murdock, 2 for 3, one of them a home run. Seven players on the Old Bridge team had 2 for 4. The winning, pitcher was A. McCarroll and the loser Sullivan. The second game Thursday was closer than the first with Buss Motors scoring 2 runs in the last of the sixth to win over Pa's Yanks 8 to 7. Home runs were hit by Meyer, N. Freund, E. Buss and B. Peisert. N. Freund got 2 for 3 for the Yanks and for Buss Motors B. Peisert and G. Schaefer got 3 for 3 and Stilling and E. Buss got 2 for 3. Winning pitcher was E. McHenry Country Club was the scene, Norm Knaack g,nd Tom O'Connell were the finalists and the event was the,, final round of 36 holes of match play for the McHenry Country Club's club champion of 1955. This match finished in a tie at the end of the 36 holes and had to go three extra holes, before O'Connell subdued Knaack. Here is a fast rundown of the match. Knaack was 3 holes down on the 5th tee. On the first turn out Norm rallied to be 1 hole up on the 10th tee. At the end of 18 holes, Knaack held a two-hole margin. After a short rest and lunch, play was resumed. At the end of 27 holes, Norm maintained a one up advantage over O'Connell. Knaack birdied the 13th hole to go 2 up but O'Connell won the 15th and 16th holes to bring the. match to even terms. Norm dropped his birdie putt to win the 17th and go into a one up lead. Both fellows hit the 18th green which is a 135 yd. par 3 hole. Tom's birdie putt was a little wide and it slid by but he tapped his ball in for an easy par. Norm's putt fell way short and he then missed his try for the par and the championship, so the match went into a sudden death playoff. Both fellows halved (tied) the first and second holes and here is the finish. Tom hit the fairway with his tee shot, but Norm hooked his shot onto the 17th fairway. I^is second shot to the pin was blipd and his ball finished on the far side of the green. Both pitched up beautifully to the pin. Norm missed his pittt and O'Connell dropped his, and to him went the club championship. Congratulations, Tom. Tuesday, Aug. 16, was another McHenry Ladies' Day and the event of the day was to see which woman could hit the longest drive off the first tee in her round of golf and the winner in Class A was Thelma (Scooter) Covalt. The Class B winner was Ann Varese and Class c was won by Marion Donnelly. Class D was won by Mildred Jackson. At Chapel Hill in the men's league, the low gross winner was Larry Corey with an 83; R. Holm was second with 89. The low net winner was Ivan Gustaf- •son, 95^*32-62, •followed' by John Divite, with 90-29-66. The only par round of golf over the weekend was shot by George Street with a 72. At Pistakee Golf Club, the Wm. Malpede family was saddened by the passing away of their father. Mr. Malpede had been ill the past summer. In the men's league the winners" were J. Lindstrom, Sr., .with a 31-1-30; second was L. Dobner with 42-7-35; and Fred Wolf was third with 39-3-36. The Tigers teed off on Klaus and Johnston for 13 hits of various distances. Howie Katz and Lloyd Freund each hit home runs. Charlie' Hiller was back home and took his old spot at third base. STEREOPHONIC SOUND & Joseph Bosky< 66, Dies Unexpectedly At Home Joseph Bosky, 66, died unexpectedly at his home at Howell's Villa subdivision, north of McHenry, Friday, Aug. 12, just a few hours before he was to have undergone a physical examination. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Bosky and his wife, Margaret, had resided in this area for the past two years. He was retired from Armour company in Chicago.
