The Johnsburg Tigers played ball last Sunday like they intend to make this county league championship series a short one. Manager Joe Frett was real pleased with his team and .well he might be. They backed up Willie Klapperich's shut-out pitching with good defensive play atl the way and hitting of a timely nature. The Tigers travel to Crystal Lake next Sunday where the Merchants will have to put up a real battle or hang up their spikes for the year. Of course, the Merchants always put up a good game on their home diamond. The Tigers won't find 'em easy. We have seen the ball take some long rolls in that spacious outfield. More than one person has asked our opinion of the MCHS J football team this year. After i the Warrior victory over Waukegan's Junior Varsity last Fri- .1 day night, the question seems to £ be, "Are we that good or wasn't Waukegan so hot?" But. somehow, you 1 get the impression that this team can win some games. * If Coach Pheanis can bring the boys along in their passing and •: kicking, things should shape up well in the Warrior camp. We have no doubt of his ability to teach the boys. Nor have we any ^ doubt about the eagerness of this Y group in wanting to learn. £ . Some games just depend on the J bounce of the ball. Others de- | pend on that all-important point •c after touchdown. The Johnsburg Tigers played heads-up baseball on their home diamond last Sunday to defeat the Crystal Lake Merchants 7 to 0 in the first game of the county league championship senes. Th series mb\&es to Crystal Lareejj Sunday. ' Klapperich was in great form as he held the Merchants to 6 hits and issued no free passes. One runner reached third base and only three got as far as second. Roewer poured in his fast ball with authority for the first three innings, allowing nary a hit. Came the third and Howie Katz led off by lashing a safe blow into left. John Huff, who replaced Lloyd Freund after a hand injury on a slide took Lloyd out, drew a pass. Howie Freund. the right man in the right spot, came up and sent both runners across the plate with a double into left center. The roof fell in on Roewer in the fifth inning as the first four men hit safely. Wahlin came in to pitch and gave up two more hits before getting the side out. Four runs scored in the inning. The final run was scored in the seventh as Howie Freund led off with a tremendous home run into the right center area. Norm Britz, an all around man, pitched the last inning for the Merchants and set the side down in order. NOTE ON THE GAME: Meyers batted in the lead-off spot and drew two walks besides getting a hit to keep the rally going in the fifth. ;; We seem to detect a winning complex in this 1955 Warrior -team. With confidence, they can I make their own breaks. On Friday afternoon, the team travels to Libertyville for a game which will start at 3:30. The following week Woodstock Will Come to M^Hemy. You m can bet on a big crowd for that li one. The crowd got quite a bang out of one of Manager Joe Feffer's storm sessions in the sixth. Joe was playing first base at the time and made a hard try to get under a high fly hit by Willie Klapperich. The wind pulled the ball back toward home plate and Joe couldn't quite reach it. He said it landed foul. The ump said it didn't. Joe pulled off his cap, fired his glove to the ground, kicked 4ir£ spoke a few thousand words. Team Shows Spirit In Grinding Away To 25-0 Victory . « The MCHS football varsity opened the season here Friday night with a 25 to 0 victory over the Junior Varsity of Waukegan High in a non-conference game. The Warriors had the visitors with their backs to the wall right at the opening kick-off when the ball rested on the 15 yard line. Waukegan chose not to kick ~on fourth down and Charles Olson broke through to smear the play. McHenry went over fast, but had their touchdown called back on an offside pehalty. Huemann wasted no time in cutting off his own right tackle to make the score 6-0. Schneider's kick was not good. McHenry kicked off and Waukegan had first down on their own 30 yard marker. A lateral was fumbled and McHenry recovered. Huemann made it first down and less than 5 yards to the goalv On the next play he lateralled to Schneider for a touchdown. But, McHenry had a holding penalty and had to start all over. This time Huemann passed to Sales for the touchdown and Schneider's good kick made the score 13 to 0. A recovery by Olson of a fumble set the stage late in . the second quarter for Schneider's race across the east goal line. But, Schneider was running high and a couple of Waukegan defenders flipped him high in the air. The hard fall knocked the wind out of him and a fumble spoiled another touchdown. A fumbled kick-off and pass interception put McHenry deep in trouble at the start of the third period, but Waukegan lost the ball on downs on the 6-yard line.. McMahon cut loose , on the first play with a run to the 35 yard stripe, taking the ball out of danger. McMahon picked up another first down, then Huemann fired a neat pass that slipped out of Sales' hands. McHenry had to kick on fourth down. Herb Baker intercepted for McHenry. Then Waukegan intercepted and had the ball on Mc- Henry's 30 as the third quarter ended with the score 13 to 0. Schneider' Runs Hard A fourth down kick by Waukegan settled on their own 44. Schneider bounced off several would-be t&cklers, then got a real helpful block from Majercik and was on his way. Schneider missed the kick and the score stood 19 to 0. McHenry picked up their final touchdown after Huemann lost 20 yards while looking for a pass receiver. Waukegan took over on our 45, but Majercik was in there again to smear the runner far in back of the line of scrimmage. Majercik did a great job all night in following the ball and spoiling the best intentions of the opposition.
