The child in the advanced stage gasps for breath because of the diphtheritic "membrane" which forms in the throat, sometimes tubes must be inserted into the windpipe through an incision" below the membrane to permit breathing. Practically Diphtheria, The Strangling Disease Because diphtheria is a communicable disease and frequently j young children are susceptible fatal, the chance of an epidemic diphtheria unless properly imis always present when large muni2e(} an<j one (jies out of evnumbers of children, who make ery fjfteen or twenty, who acrtuup two-third's of the victims, re- aijy contracts it main without proper immunity years a£ro the dis_ to the disease. Control of diphtheria is established principally through immunization, a process whereby healthy persons, are injected usually twice, with diphtheria toxoid. All children should have these injections by about six months of age. A single "booster" dose IB given later when the child entersI school. Diphtheria toxoid is a prepartimes as prevalent as it is now. Diphtheria can be wiped out completely. The science of medicine has discovered the cause and the treatment, so that it is now a preventable disease. Diphtheria is spread principally by personal contact and the greatest care must be taken to disinfect every article associated ation of "the toxin, or poisonous product, of a culture of the diphtheria germ, rendered harmless, but still retaining the ppwer to set up an immunity in persons receiving it. Diphtheria antitoxin, On the other hand, is the filtered eerum of horses which have first been immunized then given multiple doses of the toxin; the serum contains the substance produced by the horse to overcome the poison, and thus it is Used principally for treating cases of the active disease. Anyone exposed to diphtheria, though showing no evidence of illness, should have germ cultures or tests made from swabblngs of the throat. Whether exposed or not, careful individuals will go to their physicians for a Schick test (named for Dr. Bela Schick, who discovered it in 1913) if they have not been immunized as children. This test is usually done on the forearm by injecting minute amounts of dilute diphtheria toxin into the skin. If there is an area of swelling and reddening at the site after 48 hours, it shows that* the person lacks sufficient antitoxin in his tissues to protect him from invasion by the bacilli of germs causing the disease. He should therefore be immunized with toxoid. After immunization the test is repeated to determine whether the process has proved successful or whether more doses of toxoid are necessary to produce immunity. leatitil snpport for varicose veins New EXTRA SHIR Nylon Elastic Stockings frOITI MiEUHMiWMaM • Here's the two-way stretch feature 3 out of 4 doctors prescribe to relieve surface varicose veins--in light, transparently beautiful Nylon elastic stockings 1 So extra sheer, so smoothly fashioned nobody has to know they're elastic.
