The largest crowd of all time saw our MCHS Warrior basketball team defeat Barring-ton High in a rousing overtime battle last Wednesday night. Former MCHS students were home from college in gTeat numbers to add pep and enthusiasm to a game packed with thrills and Chills. : McHenry has held the short end Of the stick too long in' sports events so this big victory set the Whole crowd aflame. ] With all the noise at the finish, We failed to hear the final blast Of the buzzer. We knew the game Was over when Cliff Pulton bounded ten feet off his perch and made a dash for his team. . We liked the spirit shown by our jlther coaches and Athletic Director "Mac". Bob Hendrichs was busy keeping score, but broke out in a big smile. Jack Pheanis sat near the bench, forgetting his football headaches while pulling hard for the basketball team. "Buck" Wheeland, who has quietly gained £tature as a line coach and wrestling coach, was every bit as happy pa any member of the team. Coach Cuda, highly successful with Junior Varsity development, was in |here pitching. il This game was a shot in the j|rm for McHenry. It was a team Victory and a victory for our entire team of coaches. There were others just as •PPy. hut those are the ones we Observed as we sat there slightly Stunned. We liked it. Our teams travel to Warren Fri day night in hopes of extending this winning streak. The following week will be rugged. On Friday flight, December 9, the Yearns travel to LHjertyvillei The following hight Crystal Lake will be here. VARSITY CAGERS DEFEAT HEBRON FIVE 59 TO 47 Team Stages Last Half Comeback To Win Third Straight £ . It took a bit of doing, but the McHenry Warrior basketball team came from behind in the last half Tuesday night to beat Hebron 57 to 49 on the home floor. Hebron took an early lead on free throws, but McHenry led 18 to 13. at the quarter. The second quarter found the visitors leading the scoring 22 to 12 for a 35-30 half time lead. They sank 8 baskets and 6 free throws in that hot second quarter. Hebron's play-maker, Sitae, sank 8 straight free throws in the first half and 3 out of 6 in the last half and played a bang-up game. Fouls were numerous and calls on the close side. McHenry lost three men on fouls and Hebron had four riding through with one under their limit. Hogan came off the bench in the third quarter to replace Huff, who had four fouls at the time, and sparked the team with 8 points. Hebron scored only 4 points in the third quarter as the tide turned. The game was close until the last two minutes as both teams Itoth teams beat Hebron here Tuesday night. Twasn't easy. battled hard right down to the final buzzer. Of course, Rooksby has been a Yale man "right along." WIN OVERTIME THRILLER FOR RECORD CROWD The McHenry Warriors won their first home game of basket ball. And how! They beat the Barrington Broncos 47 to 45 in a 3- minute overtime here last Wednesday. 'Twas the night before Thanksgiving and how thankful were Coach Fulton, his boys and toe terrific fcrowd of home fans when that final second, ticked away. Never has our spacious new gym swelled at the seams before, but this time the seats were filled and spectators lined earner sidelines. The Warriors had spirit and fight that would gladden your heart. They did everything possible to play the kind of game their coach wanted them to -play. Cooperation was evident and the result was a team victory. This team of Warriors gave everything they had--and gave it all the way. Art Beck dropped in a couple of shots as the game opened to get the team off to a good start. They went on to lead 12 to 8 at the quarter, then felt the Broncos breathing down their necks and had a great battle on their hands to hold a 24-22 half time lead. McHenry's lead vanished for the first tmie in the third period when Dow dropped in a shot to give the visitors a 27-26 lead. Bernie Schmitt tied it with a free throw and was fouled again. He had two shots and made both. However, there was an over-the-line call and his second shot did not count. Southpaw Goldman sent Barrington into the lead 31-30 and when they took _a 4-point lead, things seemed to he slipping away for McHenry fans. But those Warriors had on their war paint for this game. John Huff, great all the way, stepped to the free throw line as the excited crowd pleaded on one side and wished him no luek on the other side. Two free throws swished through the net and a 39-39 tie showed on the board. Barrington made a free throw and Beck matched it. Schmitt sent McHenry into the lead with a basket and the old control game was working beautifully until Pierce was fouled. He missed his shot and Barrington took it off the boards. That troublesome Goldman went down the floor with one purpose in mind. He shot and his mission was accomplished. The score waap 42- 42 as regular time ran out, Bernie Saves 'Em Berate Schmitt, who saved his points for the crucial spots, missed a free throw, then sank a (basket. Buckley matched it and the score stood at 44 all. Buckley made a free throw that sent the Broncos ahead 45-44. Back came Bernie with another basket and a 46-45 lead. Barrington took time out to plan their final blow, but It seemed to give Coach Fulton a chance to pull his boys together for final instructions. Bill Wright, McHenry's lanky center, was fouled by Condill and added the final point of the game. Barrington brought the ball down floor for a last desperate try, but the Warriors were right on top of them to prevent scoring as the game ended. •Such a roar of excitement is seldom seen at the end of a game. Coaches are often carried on the shoulders of husky boys after a thrilling victory. They tried, but this time Cliff Fulton seemed to have a player under each wing and the rest of them on his back on the way to the shower room, BRONCO FROSH-SOPH FI VE STOPS FOURTH PERIOD MCHS RALLY The Ouda Colts, officially known as the Frosh-Sophs, put on their best display of basketball in the fourth quarter against Barrington here last Wednesday night, but lost a 45 to 35 decision. - Barrington's young, but sizeable, Broncos built up a lead in the second quarter that proved too much to overcome. The home boys puled up to within two points with two minutes to play and the final score was widened only because the boys had to come out of their defense to break up the stalling game. Dennis Conway led the scoring with 19 points, closely matched by Thorp's 18 for Barrington. Barrington J.V.
