Harper of Champaign, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois, has been appointed by Gov. William G. Stratton as superintendent of the new division of safety inspection and education in the state Department of Labor. The appointment will be effective Jan. 1. Th purpose of the division, created by the 89th General Assembly, is to promote safety practices in industrial and commercial plants throughout Illinois. OKLAHOMA IS A CARD GAME, TOO! Excitement surrounding the premiere of the musical film "Oklahoma!" also served to remind many card players of the popular card game with the same name. Oddly enough, the card game Oklahoma, a Rummy variant, reached its peak of popularity at about the same time that the musical was playing to SRO crowds during its record run on Broadway. By another coincidence, Oklahoma, like Gin Rummy, received its first national publicity when Hollywood took it up. One of the very first of the doubledeck games, Oklahoma is really a variation of 500 Rummy with some interesting modifications that have considerably enlivened the game. Any number from two to six may play using a double pack of 104 cards which rank in sequence as in st&nd ard Rummy, except that the ace is high. Deuces are wild. Each player is dealt thirteen cards, ' one at a time. The next card is turned face up and the remaining cards face down to form the stock. Starting with the player at the dealer's left, each player in turn has the privilege of taking the face up card, if he can use it in an immediate meld. If all refuse, the player at dealer's left draws the top card of the stock and play proceeds as in Rummy. Object of the game is to match up the hand in sequences of 3 or more/ cards in the same suit or in sets of 3 or 4 of th^ same denomination (sets may not be more than 4 of a kind) until the entire hand has been cleared. As his turn comes up, each player draws eitfter the last discard or the top card of the stock, ltoys face up before him any meld he wishes to declare, and then discards a card to complete his turn. The hand end# when any player clears his hand by melding his last card but one and discards that last card. You cannot go out without discarding. There are several ways to achieve good scores. You can go out as quickly as possible while your opponents are stuck with lots of cards. Or you can play to meld as many points as possible by picking up the discard pile.
