Christmas gift shops, stocked and operated by the auxiliary, will be opened in veterans' hospitals throughout the-country in December. The gift articles, aire donated by the units or purchased with contributed funds. They are given to the veterans, giftwrapped and mailed to veterans' families, all without charge. Last year, nearly $400,000 was spent on this program. Our McHenry unit made their usual monthly trip to Downey hospital this month. Pearl Nerstad, rehabilitation chairman, said that entertainment was provided for the veterans and their "treats" included apples and oranges as well as cigarettes. Canteen books were presented to the veterans in the ward under McHenry sponsorship. These books give each veteran one dollar to spend at the hospital canteen. ^ Books and magazines are always appreciated by these men and we wish to especially thank Mrs. Art Nelson of McCullom Lake, who donated ninety-six books in very good condition. Since there are some service women at Downey hospital, magazines on subjects interesting fto women are also welcome. Anyone who wishes to donate books or magazines may contact Mrs. Nerstad or take them to 'American Legion home on Qrieen street. . , Mrs. Victor Bassi, child Welfare chairman, is also busy with Christmas activities. She And a committee are filling baskets with food for needy families. These baskets will be distributed at Christmas time.
