THE McHENRY V'AJB- BnenHTi Had the pleasure of attending the football banquet at St. Mary's in Woodstock Sunday night. It was a humdinger featured by the appearance of "Moose" Krause. Don Peasley, who is fast coming to the front in 9ports writing circles, guided oQr party to a table with the Sullivans, the Stuessys, .the Roskies, the O'Briens and the likes, it maile Us feel at home and, of course, conversation was easy. They talk sports language. Tony Eoskie was telling' Us Sow he fears our Warriors in the game here Friday night. He is sure that Cliff Fulton will have his team up for this one with Woodstock. CRYSTAL LAKE FIVE PROVES TOO STRONG FOR MCHS, 77 TO 51 Tony says he can't remember when he. beat McHenry on our liome floor. We battled right back with the thought that our memory could not bring us back to a time when we beat Wood- Stock on their home floor. So it goes down through the years. Stagg feared Purdue. Bo McMillan worried about his "Pore little boys." Zuppke was coy and Rockne wrinkled, his brow. Coaches almost always fear the opposition. Roskie's fears have carried him to second place in title standings after stories that Woodstock didn't have a thing this year. Let's be on hand Friday night to watch these old rivals in action. Call it loyalty or call it what you like -- we predict that qgr Warriors will beat those Streaks Friday night. We have the points figured out (through a borrowed crystal ball), but will have to seal them and place them in a vault. Next Tuesday night crnr teams travel to Harvard for a non-conference game. A brochure from Valparaiso iversity lists Lyle Davidson, rmer MCHS athlete, on their Crusader basketball squad. Another brochure from Cornell Qollege lists Charlie Green, another local athlete, as a veteran on the wrestling team. The name McHenry is being carried near and far with our young athletes. Like manycsanother person, we were saddened to learn that Warren Jones had lost a hard fight in battling to regain His health. We don't think they make finer boys or finer men than Warren. We have never heard him speak with any ill.will toward a fellow man. Crystal Lake's league-leading basketball team came to town Saturday night and showed why they top the -North Suburban' conference standings at this stage. .'At the final coupt the visitors had beaten our willing, but not adequate Warrior team 77 to 51. The home boys were certainly in the right frame of mind:/for an upset as they took the play away from the opposition in the first quarter. The game stayed close in the second quarter, but Don Olsson lift four shots from outside while the McHenry defense was attempting to cover superior height under the basket McHenry fouls were piling up and Crystal Lake had 10 points from the free throw sline against 4 single pointers for the Warriors as the half ended 36 to 30. During most of the first half this observer thought the Warriors were playing their best basketball of the season. Came the third quarter and the tides changed fast. Crystal Lake started to take the play away and the eventual outcome soon became evident. Coach Fulton shifted his liineup to good advantage from time to time, but had nobody to match the towering John Buhrow and Jim Hirflh. It was McHenry's game in the early part, but Crystal Lake's the rest ef the way by a safe margin. Crystal Lake (77) B F P D. Olsson 6 0 .5 B. Jacobs 4 7 3 M. Johnson 13 2 J. Buhrow 7 5 2 J. The Warriors were not sharp in the first quarter and the Libertyville team took advantage-of mis takes to roll up a 20 to 6 lead on some neat j shooting. When the Warriors, failed to clicks Coach Fullton sent in Jim Huemanm and *Eom McMahoh. Jim's agressiveness, plus . some much-needed points, combined with Tom's rugged play under the baskets, to get the team under way. Fouls and free throws again beat the Warriors. You can easily see that by a glance at the box score. It was a big "Moose" of a fellow named Garrison wno led the scoring and 10 of his 16 points were registered on free throws. The winners piled up too much too soon. Totals McHenry (51) Pierce McMahon Hogan Schmitt Cepulis Wright Wissell Huff Beck J. Walter is spending the Winter down in Georgia with his son-inlaw and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. JamesWest. It was down there that Walter recently had the pleasure of meeting Dick Walsh, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Walsh. The^letter tells us that young Dick is up to his ears in baseball -- just like his dad. In fact, Dick, Jr., is secretary of minor league clubs for the Brooklyn Dodgers. McHENRY FROSH-SOPH ROLLS TO 68-58 WIN OVER LIBERTYVILLE The American Legion basketball schedule for grade school boys started last Saturday morning with interest high and competition keen. Wonder Lake defeated Ringwood 20 to 9. Hester's 14 points led St. Mary's to a 31 to 24 victory over St. John's. Newkirk dropped in 21 points as Junior High defeated St. Patrick's 28 to 21. If possible some of the box Bcores will be run on the games. The first game will start at .8:30 a.m, sharp. The gym will be opened approximately at 8:00 a.m. The second game will be scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and the last game for 10:30 a.m. At the end of the regular schedule the annual tournament will be held. Well, it seems that Mr. James Raycraft took the wording as a statement of disbelief. He brought my dad both of the fox feet as evidence. Sure an' we didn't doubt it/ for a minute. Ice fishing is picking up all the time. Most of the boys are fishing around Meyer's Bay. The limit on pike has been dropped to one a day. Not much fishing is being done for pike and only a few have been caught. We figure they should really start hitting albout a week or so after Christmas, but you can't be sure. One thing that we have especially noticed is the low number of small bluegills being caught. Other years more small ones were caught. This year the bluegills are not monsters but they are still good sized. Maybe the little ones are still hiding. The MCHS Frosh-Soph. basketball boys put on quite a scoring show and fine example of team work to beat Libertyville 68-56 on the losers' floor last Friday evening. Shooting was keen on hoth sides as Libertyville hit 41% from the floor and 22 out Of 29 free throw chanoes. McHenry had a 40% mark and 20 out of 28 free throws. This free throw depart ment was led by Jimmy Jus ten With 10 points in 10 throws. McHenry ran into trouble with & full press in the last quarter, but pulled ttnmselves together for a good fisiiti?!. is 9 SHOPPING A OAYSIBT/} The annual election of officers was held Monday night as the Sportsman Club of McHenry selected officers for the coming year. Ray Hughes was elected President, Chet Snyder re-elected Vice- President and Robert Justen Secretary- Treasurer. The outgoing officers were Robert Thurlwell, who served as President, and Bill O'Brien the Secretary-Treasurer during the past year. The 20 members present enjoyed a phea|ant dinner following the meeting. Next Sunday, December 18, the club will hold a pulblic trap shoot. Sportsmen are invited to attend. WRESTLING The Warriors won an easy viC; tory over an inexperienced Libertyville team Friday night, scoring 58 points to 0 for Libertyville Every match was won by a fall except at 175 where Bill Brooks had his opponent on his back most tof the time but couldn't flatten his shoulders. Starting' next week, we ask that league secretaries send in either complete copies of games or list htgh scores as you did previous to our plan of printing league standings. A survey tells us that bowlegs and readers prefer individual names to team standings. You might include team standings so that we can use them from time to time. Any special news items will also, oe appreciated. To the head of the class this week goes Zelda Malochleb's 243- 550. Another note tells us that Rose Marie Lee (with a 128 avrage) came through with a 212 game. Bet she was happy. Charles Green, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Green, 306 Court street, McHenry, is a member of Cornell college's defending Midwest conference champion wrestling squad for the 1955-56 season. Cornell has won the conference crown 14 consecutive years and will be trying to uphold last sea- Son's 7-1-1 dual meet record. The team is coached by Chuck Bryant, who has been head mentor four years. The season's schedule'includes meets with Purdue, Minnesota and Kansas State among others. McHenry Junior Hunter Safety Club Lest Saturday the rifle club had? a class meeting at their indOori range. .They had practice firing; around the Prone position and used pillows to aid in holding; their guns steady. During January and February they will go over all the factors^ of the prone position. The pillows will be used to aid in; the elimination of all "human/ errors" so as to get the proper' understanding of Trigger squeeze and holding the breath. Exam papers were handed out to all . club members present and the boys are expected to complete the exams which were written up around subjects discussed during class meetings and also in their N.R.A. handbooks. This is one of the exams which the bpys must pass which would pertain to ttefoL certification upon completing' a firearms educational course. Next Saturday our club will participate in nation-wide competition with other N.R.A. clubs in the December Postal Matches. The following is a list of McHenry area boys representing us in this match: Bill Vavrik, Joe Sanford, Denny Marshall, "Butch" Miller, John Steinbach, Roy Miller, John Bjork, Jack Osterby, Bob and Glenn Gates, Terry Harth, "Buzz" and Bill Jensen, and Gregory Burg. TO CRYSTAL LAKE CAGE 45-37 McHenry's Frosh-Soph basketball boys lost a, 45 to 37 decision to Crystal Lake here Saturday night and sbill wonder what happened in that second quarter. Coach Chuck Cuda's boys had looked impressive the night before at Libertyville and picked right up in' this game to lead 14-10 at the first period ending. Then the home boys ,were out-scored 18-3 in the second quarter against Crystal Lake. Thiat was too much in sptfte of a fighting comeback in the last half. Jimimy Justen, who is- showing vast improvement in recent games, scored 17 points and escaped without a personal foul. McHenry lost three men on fouls. Crystal Lake J.V.
