J-r tiff Pour ^157 THE McHENHY PLAINDEALER 'J^' * " Thursday, December 22,1955 - 9 Kea)t"l It's Christmas time. The day itself has its own true and glorious meaning. ' But, coming down the stretch we are faced with a season -- a season that starts before Thanksgiving and wears us to a frazzle along about this time. Guess we wouldn't want it to change too much. What other season of the year do we show and feel such kindness'and good will toward others ? We wouldn't want the season to last any longer. It is the graxid spirit of Christmas time that could and should linger longer. Why -- we haven't Ynet a person on the street this week whom we did not like! Whether we knew the person, or not, we liked 'em. . Maybe it is the feeling that the mother fellow is doing the same things, thinking of the same things and struggling with the same problems that face us at this busy time. WRESTLING The McHenry wrestling team lost for the first time, this year to a powerful Elgin team and, then won from a scrappy Wauconda group. ' The best of the Elgin matches was between Taylor and Hozier with the Elgin boy win ning a one point decision'. The only points scored by McHenry came in the heavyweight match where .big John Sternickje tied Sayers. 95, Hoffman pinned by Johnson 105, Kimvgrk (M) 0, Vellinga (E) 9 112, Moss (M) .pinned by Rocha (E) • 120, Jessup (MJ 0, Ransom (El*)-6 127,., Taylor (M) -1. It was Eichinger's turn to lead the scoring this time and he sank five baskets plus 11 out of 13 cha|ices from the free throw spot. With a safe lead in the last half the entire McHenry bench was given a chance, to perform. Some say it isn't the past, it (isn't the future -- it is the present that counts at Christinas •-time. We dunno. Seems that a vast majority of people gain their greatest pleasure in the thoughts of making others happy at this time of year. # Conditions are about the same; eafch year, We never follow the resolution to shop early. We always get two of three cards from people whom we should have re-, merrabered. We always plan to visit old friends, then find the holiday season slip past before we know what happened. We always wonder if there are any children in our community whom Santa didn't visit. When asked what we want for Christmas, we never "fail to answer -- "a pair of socks." Wauconda fell by a score of 40 to 7, winning just one match from the Warriors. Pins by Taylor, Thompson, Walker and Sternickle highlighted the evening. The McHenry team will participate Ln the Palatine holiday tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 26 a!nd 27. First round matches be gin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. 95, Hoffman pinned by Cousar. 103, Kinnerk 7, Ragland 7 112, Moss 6, Hartigan 1 120, Jessup 6, Grist 2 127, Taylor pinned Long-field 133>, Vogt 3, Gagniclain 0 138, '.Thompson pinned Carney 145, Lundborg 2, Hoffmann 0 154, Horn 3, Cashmarer 0 165, Walker pinned Pierick 175, Brooks 8, Cermak 5 H., Sternickle pinned Henne That lighted Christmas tree floating in Fox River near the old bridge has attracted a lot of attention. Now, we hear that pelople are lining the bridge rail to) count the number of lights on the tree. Seems that Don Hoenes has offered a couple of cheer-^ ked prizes to those coming est in their guess. They will ter their guesses with Don Thursday and Friday, then await the decision on Saturday. That bowling score turned in lor Bud Thennes this week makes Us take a second look -- 638 pins -- all in three games. We couldn't do it in six. Dates have been announced for the Third Annual K. .of C. Basketball Tournament Jan. 15 and 22. More about that later. As we ate our breakfast on Wednesday morning the man on the radio told us that it is estimated that 530 people will lose their lives in traffic accidents during the holiday weekend. We wish that each of that number and others involved could reacj' this little prayer before starting that journey: Prayer For Autoists " Give me a steady hand and watchful eye, that no man shall be hurt when I pass by. Thou gavest life, and I pray no act of mine may take away or mar one gift of Thine, shelter those, dear Lord, who bear me company from the evils of fire and calamity. Teach me to use my car for other's need, nor miss through love of speed the beauties of the world; that thus I may with joy and courtesy go on my way. Rev. Wendell p.
