MARENGO HOTEL DESTROYED IN FIRE WHICH KILLED ONE One of Marengo's worst fires in recent years occurred last Thursday t morning, taking the life of an elderly man and destroying the Majestic hotel. Recovered from the ruins was the body of Walter Shafer, about 80, in whose room the fire was believed to have started. Another guest in the hotel reported to authorities that he found Shafer sitting in a chair which was ablate. As he went for help, the fire spread and enveloped the room, making it impossible to enter. v Fire departments from Woodstock, Union and Poplar Grove assisted the Marengo department in fighting the blaze, which caused damage to nearby places of business.
