Richmond Community News By Phyllis Carlson "Country Mile" Richmond residents enjoy see* tag the old Borre store occupied once again. The "Country Mile," formerly located on Route 173, has moved into the Borre buildteg. Dorothy Bitzer and Frank Stevens, the proprietors, have made the old store/vers' lovely with lots of wor! Pee Wee King Tomorrow night at the high school is the Pee Wee King show sponsored by the P.T.A. There are plenty of tickets available (and you are welcome to attend. Popcorn and pop will be available during intermission time at the show. Crippled Children Tag Day This week will be the time for remembering to send in your money for the Easter seals you received in the mail. There will be Easter seal taggers out Friday night at the P.T.A. show and today in school. Every donation will help support the, therapy center in Woodstock. The speech clinic offered every year for children with defective speech is also a part of the Easter seal program. Women's Council Met The Women's council of the Community church met last week to hear Mr. Schwenke of the Chicago City Missionary society. On Easter Monday, several young people from the Youth Fellowship group will go to Chicago to see some of the . work of the city missionary society. Palm Sunday Cantata Sunday evening, the combined choirs of the Community church and Grace church will sin£ portions of the "Messiah." TTiey have been hard at work for several weeks on it and would appreciate your listening for about an hour on Sunday evening. Mrs. Victor Oesterling will direct the cantata. ^ After the music, cookies and coffee will be served by the women of the participating churches. If you've ever tasted their cookies, you'll be sure to "come! ^ Family Night The family night supper at the Community church last Friday night was very successful for ninety people attended. Thirtyseven of the ninety* were children from nursery age through the third grade. Responsible for the enjoyable evening were the Colby family, Mrs. Don Rawlins, Mrs. William Gardner, Mrs. Paul Winn and serving committees froiq the Friendship group and the Couples club. _ Church News Palm Sunday, the junior choir will sing at the Community church at the regular service. New members will be received into the Community church on Palm Sunday. Good Friday services under the auspices of the Community and Lutheran churches will be held at Grace church this year from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This week, the men of Grace church are working on the installation of new folding doors to replace the old wooden folding doors of the church. They will have the new doors hung in time for Holy Week and Easter services. Tonight, the Junior Youth? Fellowship group will meet at Grace church. The senior choir of Grace church will also meet tonight. Tomorrow afternoon, the Friendship group of the Community church will meet at the home of Miss Myra Speaker at 1:45 p.m. Saturday night, the cantata choir will meet for a special rehearsal. Frances Wood is playing the organ for the cantata. The Good Fellowship group of the Community church will meet at the home of Mrs. Ralph Noyce Wednesday, March 28, at 1:45 p.m. Dr. Bertha Shafer will be co-hostess with Mrs. Noyce. Here apd There Mr. and Mrs. George Madden and Patty helped plan a surprise birthday party for Mrs. Madden's mother, Mrs. J. O'Halloran last Friday night. Other guests at the party were Mr. and Mrs. Fred O'Halloran and family, Mr. and Mrs. James'O'Halloran and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kenny O'Halloran, Misses Joan and Dorothy O'Halloran, Mrs. Olga Madden and her children, Mary Jean, Dick, Shirley and Stanley. The party was near McHenry at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. O'Halloran. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Bell and daughter, Phyllis, of Union were Sunday afternoon callers in the home of Mrs. Arthur Bell. At the P.T.A. meeting last Wednesday, the subject of a new location for a new grade schoolwas discussed. The school board is to investigate several sites and report their findings at a P.T.A. meeting next October. Last Thursday evening, the Richmond P.T.A. was represented at the McHenry county council meeting of the P.T.A. at Algonquin by Mr. and Mrs. Francis Arsenau and Mr. Lou Burks. We have noticed several' robins in ^Jhe yard lately, so it must be true that spring is here. There are several children out of school because of .chicken pox: Barbara Waspi, Donny Harris, Jeffrey Hoffman and Harry Buchert. The latter's daddy caught it too and had to stay home from work. There are probably many more whose names I have not heard. Stork Visits The H. Andersons Mr. and Mrs. Harold Anderson are the parents of a boy, bom March 12 at Woodstock. Little Roger Lee is the baby's nam^. Charlotte is his big sister ana Lloyd 'is his brother, who were eagerly waiting at home for Roger Lee. No Rotary club shall take any active part in politics, religion or any controversial subject in the community. Their motto is service above self and therefore, their service is to the community as*a whole to help the destitute, the crippled, and to promote such things as boys and girls' activities, community safety, scholarships, youth activity, international student projects and employer-employee relations. The following are- some of the community activities of the Richmond Rotary club during the past year and a half, some by the Rotary club alone and some through the cooperation of non- Rotary, local businessmen. 1. Over $3,000 subscribed to the Memorial hospital for a room dedicated to the Richmond Rotary club. 2. Entertaining the high school athletic department and teams. 3. Sponsoring the entertainment of the Richmond kiddies' trip to the Shrine circus at Rockford. 4. Supplying food and clothing for two destitute families. 5. Sponsoring and handling the Christmas party for Richmond kiddies. 6. Donated ove* $250 toward the Rotary Foundation fellow* ships which have been awarded to 128 young men and women for the academic year 1956-195?. The awards , went to ninety-three young-men and thirty-five young women from "thirty-two countries who will pursue their studies in twenty-four countries. The student selected from our districts is from St. Anne,* 111., who will study in Australia. . The club members and guests have enjoyed some wonderful programs, both educational and entertaining. On March 27, the club is entertaining thg high school football and basketball teams and their fathers and an invitation has been issued to every businessman in Richmond. The speaker is to be Stu Holcomb, athletic director of Northwestern university, who is a well known football coach previous to accepting this position at Northwestern. Spaghetti Dinner „ The American Legion auxiliary will serve a spaghetti supper on Wednesday, April 4, at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to corrie^ to the dinner. Firemen Honored Tuesday, March 12, the Richmond fire department held its regular monthly meeting at Memorial hall. Lunch was served and four charter members of the department were honored. Each of them has completed thirty years of service with the Richmond fire department. They are Frank Buchert, Otto Buchert, Glen Buchert and Walter Pretz* man. Fire Chief Bob Stevens announced that a new fire truck will be purchased. The new truck will be a combination pumper and water truck. It Will have a 600-gallon water tank and the most modern pump. The pump is a 500-gallon-per-minute two-stage centrifugal pump. CONTINUE HEARING Paul Kelven, 26, of Ringwood, was arrested by sheriff's deputies Thursday night on a charge of having fictitious license plates on his car. He> was charged with having repainted his 1954 plates to make them look like those of 1956. He was also reported to have been driving while his license was revoked. Bond of $2,500 was set and the case continued until March 24. Rocket Baseball The Rocket baseball team will soon be trying to win the school's third straight crown within one school season. The Rockets have won the football and basketball titles and are now hoping for a clean sweep. Ned Morgensen, the head coach, will have some real good talent back as he has had in basketball and football. A few of the returning lettermen are Bob Miller, Bud Jarrett, Bob Christensen and Rog Shaw. We will list the entire squad as soon as we are able to acquire it from the coach. Zephyrs Beat Elgin 87-77 The' Richmond Zephyrs closed out tHeir home season last Sunday with their thirty-sixth win. They defeated the Elgin Fremont Center Recreation, 87-77.
