So -- come Sunday ttight, April 15, at the hour of B o'clock the boys will stage a "Nickel Night" m the V.F.W. club rooms. You spend your money a nickel at a time ana nave a lot of fun. Ttie days of a good 5-cent cigar or nickel bag of candy may be gone, but the nickel is important at this event. Like the song says -- "You- All Come." Are those Easter bonnets getting more sensible or are we just getting used to them? Oh rr~ there are still a few dilly looking numbers, but it will take a radical change to arouse our interest. Illinois State College tennis squad starting the season with a trip to Louisiana. We are again grateful for receipt of the "Chicago Cub News," a publication that leaves no doubt in our mind that the Wrigley-Mathews-Hack entry is a shoo-in for the National League pennant. Let me tell you -- that team has been strengthened! Changeable weather has given us something to talk about and tornadoes have given the newspapers a chance to bury news of Grace Kelly, Margaret Truman and Bridie Murphy. We were .enthusiastic about this spring Weather until word started floating around our house about storm windows, lawn rakes and house-cleaning. This new personal property tax schedule furthers our belief that we are becoming the greatest form-filler-outer nation in the world. Ill fecent years we have suffered more with desjgns for men*8cbats and other apparel. In out* day you might as >y§ll: have tried to pin a pettico&t^&n a young lad as try to '^^a-vpink shirt on him. And the next guy or gal who tries to tell us tliat these new narrow-rim hats do anything for a wide face like ours had better be ready for a quick take-off. Rooksby has swung over to the St. Louis Cardinals. A fellow has certain leanings toward his old home town, you know. Come to think of it, maybe our White Sox shouldn't have picked those Cardinals as playmates for their retufn trip to Chicago. They seem to play rough. . But let's not worry over the loss of a couple of games' before the season starts. See where Casey Stengel ad- Vises teams to use the platoon system. The time and place will be announced in next week's Plaindealer. The purpose of this meeting is to get everything in order for the coming season. There will be an election of officers and appointment of . managers and coaches to positions that are now open. Also, there will be a discussion on dates for tryouts and the player selection system. We would like to have adult volunteers to take charge of the park for each game. This Would mean spending your time one or two nites of the year to see that the base lines were marked and that everything in general goes off smoothly. Also at this meeting we would like to lay the ground work for the Pony League Organization. I have a book on Pony League which will serve as a guide to the group that actually sets up the league. It is very necessary that some of the fathers take the lead in this league, as they will naturally be the most interested and the most likely to make it a success. I would like to say at this point that, those of us who had a part in organizing Little League in McHenry were trying to do something for the kids, but before long we realized the kids had done something for us. And I am sure that you will find that work done with children always pays high dividends.
