# Thursday, May 10, 1956 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER McCullom Lake News By Eve Leveaqoe Shocking Tragedy ^ here are hardly any words of comfort to offer the parents of little Donna Lee Harrison, whose young life was tragically ended on Saturday. But it is not quite six weeks ago that we celebrated Christ's victory over the grave. And there is no doubt that Donna has joined the angels in Heaven. » A . delightful youngster, with a (Uet personality, Donna was a ifllasure to anyone who came in contact with her. Neighbors and friends described her as a "perfect little mother." As she met her untimely demise, Donna was holding baby Linda on her lap in the front seat of the car. * ---Our heartfelt prayers now are with the grief-stricken mother, Mrs. Evelyn Harrison, that her life might be spared for the SJier two children who need her. n the shoulders of the young father rests the responsibility of caring for Dickie and Linda and comforting his wife. We know that the residents of our village will gather around this family in their time of need. Double Blow Still shocked from the blow of the Harrison tragedy, our village v£s appalled by the unfortunate accident which happened to Bobby Gates. Your reporter finds it a difficult task to write about these things which happen. Since our community is small enough for personal contact with everyone, one finds it hard- to be objective by these tragedies. Bobby is a happy youngsters who finds pleasure in the wholesome things in life, such as playing ball and fishing. It seems an unmitigated sh^me that one of his greatest joys should be responsible for putting his sight in jeopardy. The young lad who was responsible for the unintentional mishap deserves cheering words of comfort, for he, too, is suffering. truly delightful day, sponsored by the Cullom-Knoll association. The regular monthly meeting wais held on Sunday. Since our incorporation, the funds which were formerly spent to include road improvement, snow plowing, etc., have been concentrated on the park and beach. We pride ourselves on this private beach. But it can only be maintained with your help and membership. For a nominal sum of six dollars a year, good swimming, playgrounds and other wholesome outdoor activities, can be maintained for children and adults. Send your check to cover your dues to Mrs. Betty Poledna, treasurer, or Art Stuhlfeier, president of the Cullom-Knoll. Village Council rhe public is invited and urged to attend the open meeting of the village board Monday, May 14, at 8 p.m. promptly, at the beachhouse. Your president and trustees are serving your interests. Come, and hear for yourself, what plans are being formulated in your behalf. x Drawing Card ^People for miles around will flock to our homecoming picnic Saturday, July 14, to see Jim Conway, WBBM radio and TV personality, who will -be one of the judges for our Miss McCullom Lake contest. Mr. Conway, a friend of Village President Jake Levesque, kindly consented to come and be a part of the festivities. His real life personality is f^en more charming than is projected over the airwaves and on your TV screen. Mr. Conway is onty one of the many fine features which are being offered and planned for a Rain, Haiti, Go Away It didn't, on Saturday, %tit in spite of the heavy "moisture" which fell from the skies the bake and rummage sale. far exceeded expectations. A tidy sum was realized by the Ladies of the Lake during the event. Betty Houck, Anne Mathesius, Marie Howe, Betty Poledna and Louise Hammerstein worked many hours to.put this sale across. About ten times as much bakery goods could have been sold had the "goodies" come in. Startling items were brought in by generous donors, including lamps, electrical appliances, shoes, clothing of all sizes, sorts and varieties, handbags and toys. The sale was different and fun and may be repeated at some future date. Ladles of the Lake A business meeting will be held tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. Come yourself and bring a prospective member. The boys' chorus, including Tom and Billy, placed first in their division. Hats off to these capable youngsters. Going Stag Six handsome, well-dressed fellows stepped out on the town Saturday to spend their bowling winnings.
