/• THE McHENRT HUUHDEALEH JM3BWS Stf WetiUJt. « - gmttft'l News pops out of Riverside Drive. Some is rather Hush-hush. They tell us it was Melvin Whiting, who was seen carrying a string of suckers out of Nye's Drug Store.! Never knew he fished! But, they are cautious about revealing the name of a young business man who will sponsor two of the girls in Nye's for beauty quean. How can he sponsor two gals? He will have to make up his mind. Little League By Bill Bolger Uncle Sam's mailmen are so different., When Ed Doyle (a Cub fan) delivers the mail, he is in a great hurry these days. When Gene Schaafer (a Sox fan) delivers, he enjoys a word about recent happenings. The McHenry Shamrocks got off 6n the wrong foot last Sunday as they ran into Block's blazing fast *,,ball at Elgin last Sunday. Next Sunday the McHenry team goes to Crystal Lake where they hope to bring about a .500 rating. The Johnsburg Tigers whomped Algonquin and now face Hebron on the - Johnsburg diamond. As we recall past years, it seems Hebron teams have always given Johnsburg a hard time. Better not let down for this one, boys. Did you ever see so many beautiful dandelions as we have this -year? One little boy was reial disturbed at seeing his father chop them off. "They are s6 pretty." One must admit, they require care than any other flower you can name. Irrom California comes a 2- year • subscription renewal from the Frank Justens. Frank added a note to us, telling how good it is to keep track of McHenry people. He also says he is still waiting for us to visit California and warns that time is slipping fast. Guess Frank is right. There is, more time behind us than ahead. Another thing, Frank. McHenry's Old Timers are making way tor a new group of Old - Timers. You will read this week of Nick Barbian's death. Another California- McHenryite, Dick Walsh, never failed to inquire for the Barbians. Changes may come, but we will always see Mr. and Mrs. Barbian sitting on the porch or on the lawn as we turn that corner. They were a grand couple. From all indications it appears certain that there will be twelve Little League teams again this ye&r--six major and six minor. Approximately 175. boys have registered to play. Any boy who wishes to be considered for a major team must be registered before May 23rd. Xhy one registering after that time will have to play, minor league ball. Of course, minor leaguers ;will again have a chance to move up' to the majors during the season so it will be up to each boy to give it all he has. Each boy will be notified as to the team he is to play on. If any boy does not know which team he is on by June 1st, please call me or the player agent, Frank Johnson, and we will find out for you. The important thing to remember is that every boy that registers and reports for practice will be given a uniform and will have an opportunity to play. The major league teams will use last year's uniforms, with the:' exception of caps which are purchased new each year. The minor league teams will have new T shirts with the team names on them. We are considering changing the names of the minor league teams as the National Headquarters does not allow farm teams. Each minor league team is to be independent of any major team. In this way, if a major team loses a player through sickness, injury or moving away, they can select a player from any minor leagua team. So you kids in the minors have a splendid opportunity to advance if you improve rapidly. Due to the tremendous interest in the minors last year, we are being very careful to have adult supervision for each minor league team. Several adults have shown a preference to manage in the minors because they enjoyed the younger boys so much last year. If there are any adults who haven't had a chance to volunteer their services, call me and I will see if we can place you with one of the teams. Likewise, if you are working with the boys and during the season you feel you do not have the time to do a, good job, let me know and we will secure additional help. Last week we discussed the possibility of getting Ralph Patzke to be official score keeper, reporter and statistician for Little League. We will ask him and if he consents it will be a great thing for the league as he is very good at that type of work. WITH By Jimmy Kopec PICKUPS-- Whether a fellow winds up with a nest egg or a goose egg depends a heap on the kind of clack he married. Remember, these trying times will be the "good old days" in just a few years. Pony League baseball is moving along in McHenry. Four teams are being organized and a schedule will be made up in due time. Officers, coaches and players gathered at the city hall last night (Wednesday) to line up teams. We hope to have a regular reporter covering this league. So -- be watching. FLUORIDATED WATER The number of Illinois residents who have public water which is fluoridated to help prevent decay of children's teeth jumped last week from 416,000 to 1,818,000, according to an estimate prepared by the state Department of Public Health. This large increase came from the addition of fluoride to the water supplies at Chicago's south district filtration plant, which serves a portion of Chicago and 16 suburban municipalities. We found these statistics interesting. New school construction increased 796 per cent in ten years to try to catch up with school age population (1946-1955). New homes have exceeded 1,000,000 per year for seven years to supply the demand for better living. New automobiles: 2,148,699 in 1946, almost 8,000,000 built in 1955. (We suspect 7 million pass through McHenry on a good weekend.) BENEFIT DINNER A roast beef dinner will be served at the Ringwood Methodist church on Wednesday, May 30, with serving at noon, 1 and 2 o'clock. The proceeds will benefit the church building fund. McHenry' Golf Squad Places Second In Conference Meet The McHenry golf squad travelled to Crystal Lake only to fall 20 strokes behind Barrington. The team did not show up as well as they did in the district, except for Matt Eichinger, who took second place with a 79. He was one stroke behind Butch Lundstrom from Crystal Lake. Jim Justen had an 88 for the second lowest score for the McHenry team. Other scores were Larry Corey 95, Art Beck 100, and Bob Cable 102. Matt Eichinger, who is only a freshman, is one of the most consistent players on the squad. With a little help from the other boys, next year or the year after, McHenry should have a strong team. McHenry H. S. Golf Squad Placed Fifth in District Tourney - Arlington high school took the bows for winning the district tournament with a 292 (best 4 men). This is the first district that the golf team of McHenry had entered in the past 6 years. The golf squad did very well as our boys all shot in the 80's. Matt Eichinger encountered putting trouble and shot an 85. Larry Corey again had trouble with the back nine with a 45, but his 40 on the front nine gave him an 85. Art Beck started bad on the front nine with a 46 but came back with a 40 on the back nine which gave him a total of 86. Jim Justen was consistent on both nines with 44-44, total 88. Fifth man, Bob Cable, was high with a 94. His score did not count since only the lowest four scores are totalled. McHenry beat such teams as Crystal Lake, Barrington, St. Charles, Ela Vernon, St. Ed's and St. Mary's. The winners in Class A were LaVerne Hanley, taking: the honor for first and Joan Buss second. Class B was won by Dorothy Kraus. Myrt McElmeel was the second place winner. Betty Wilkensen took the bows for first in Class C and Marion Donnelly was 2nd. We hear E. H. shot a 49. Not bad, Mrs. H. John Varese and Chuck Jensen were winners of 2 ball best ball 36 hole tournament of the post two Sundays. Their total was 125. In the low net 2 ball best ball W Kadisak and R. Hughes had a 64. J. Varese and C. Jensen also had a 64 as did B. Kralowetz and T. O'Connell. In the blind bogey best ball, John Varese and Chuck Jensen came in first. R. Hughes and W. Kadisak, R. Kralowetz and T. O'Connell tied for 2nd. Here's a good alibi, folks: A golfer stood pn the first tee of a strange course, took a healthy cut at the ball and missed. On his second swing, the clubhead again whizzed over the top of the ball. At this point, the golfer turned, to his partner and explained: "It may take me a while to get used to this course. It's much lower than the one I play at home." SHAMROCKS LOSE TO ELGIN VETS 7 TO 1 IN SEASON OPENER The McHenry Shamrocks <>penthe season last Sunday by travelling to Elgin, where they absorbed a 7 to 1 loss to the V.F.W. entry in the McHenry County League. A 5-run blast by the vets against McHenry's Starting pitcher, Shook, was all that was necessary as things turned out. Block, strong-armed the Shamrocks with a 4-hitter ahd missed a shut-out when Sahs singled and G. Molidor doubled in the sixth for McHenry's oiily win Shook's wildness caused him a lot of trouble and "Sonny" Miller took over in the Sixth to mow 'em down the rest of the way. Results have been good. We understand that while seining, the members also ran into some bass, bluegills and crappies. The club intends to sponsor a fishing rodjeo some time in the future. We will publish the date for this rodeo when the issue is settled. Meetings of the McCullom Lake Sportsmen's Club have been cancelled until fui> ther notice. Shooting carp with the bow and arrow has "started. We talked to one fellow last Sunday and he told us that he had had some fine shooting down at Snug Harbor the day before. We have heard reports of some carp in Dutch Creek but we have not heard just how thick the water is with them up there. Lftrry Geier went fishing with us the other night. He picked a spot under a tree that hung out over the water. He caught his share of fish but we didn't bother to count how many times he caught the tree. At first he was pretty exasperated. A little while later he calmed down and did some fine fishing. All the members of the McHenry Rifle Club are urged to attend an important meeting at the range next Tuesday, May 22. Some forthcoming trophy matches will be discussed. This figure is supplied by the Institute for Safer Living which advises: Provide sturdy, tamperproof screens for rooms occupied by children; never locate furniture near windows so that children can climb to sills; never position a child's crib or bed next to an open window; never leave a child unattended on an open, unprotected porch. FAULTY THERMOSTAT A faulty thermostat on the furnace in the Norbert Smith residence at Johnsburg resulted in a small fire and a great amount of smoke which required the attention of McHenry volunteers Wednesday morning. No damage was reported. History keeps repeating itself -- and every time this happens the price goes up. A reporter was sent out to round up opinions of men in the street concerning modern women. The first person he queried wqg; a man who had recently passed his one hundred and first birthday. •"I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you," replied the centurian regretfully, "I quit thinking about women almost two years ago." Everything you buy has hidden taxes on it plus state sales tax. It seems to me that they can cut this tax to a uniform rate and a reasonable, one for all. Also, people on pension should not be compelled to pay this tax. There is an amendment to be voted on in November of this year oh this tax so be sure to do your duty in- voting on this Issue. Also, I was told the county board of supervisors voted to collect this tax in McHenry county. Everyone who pays this , tax should do so under protest and „ at the same time give serious thought to replacing the county brard of supervisors.
