THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER ';^:'V w'; Thursday, May 24, 195$ • v$ SP0BTS J$y £eut& WOMaSI. ho- *heibc i i-imt donned winter clothing .llitt Sunday afternoon and toured down to Walkup Woods to see our Shamrocks play ball with Crystal Lake. After giving away a few runs, the Shamrocks settled into quite a battle that went that-a-way in tHe eleventh. HERE AND THERE WITH GOLF We missed seeing some of the old crowd. "Guv" Bolger must have hung up his spikes. So did hustling Harry Stilling. And Spnny Miller wasn't around. Manager Larry' Stilling lacked bench strength and could have used a couple of pinch hitters to real advantage. We wouldn't pick Sahs for a lead-off man, but Larry did and must have been right. Sahs went to bat six times and got on base five tirrfes. Three times he drew walks. £ Joe Stanek played" a winning brand of ball at second base and lashed out a couple of solid hits. By Jimmy Kupec Bill Huebsch, a well-built fellow, hit a triple his first time up and probably cut too hard in his other times at bat. More practice should make him a dangerous sticker. Becknell hit a homer and triple, was robbed of one hit and lined smack at the shortstop another time. Bob McCulla was a waiter at the plate and drew three walks besides beating out a hit. We are sure that Manager Stilling would like to come up with a couple more ball players. He may get some* help after schools are out. Hebron comes to McHenry next Sunday with a group of earnest ball players hoping to strengthen up to hold the pace in the county league. They will also be much stronger when the school term ends, probably picking up some college strength. Come Saturday and they will be telling one and all "There'll be dancing tonight" at Johnsburg. Thi^ will be the annual baseball dance at the "Community or Memorial Hall. McHenry's Golf Squad Closes Season^Vk't/oricms Before we go\into last Tuesday's and Thursday's results may this column go on that verbal limb in respect for the golf team. Two weeks ago we urged parents interested in golf, to have their 10 to 14 year olds take up golf so McHenry high school can have a strong golf team in the future. We suggest this golf squad be given a lift by getting together with parents and friends and have some fun. If this column can be of assistance in any way, we will be glad to oblige. Tuesday, May 15, Barrington came to McHenry and won 7-3. Hie weather was against us. It was raining and only nine holes were played. Matt Eichinger was the only winner, 47-47. Jim Justen ti6d 45-45. Larry Corey lost on the last hole 48-47. Bob Cable lost 47-45 and Ed Cepulis lost 48-42. Thursday, Grayslake came to McHenry and were overpowered 15-0. Matt Eichinger won easily 85-102. Lary Corey was off his usual game, but came through to win his match 99-105. Jim Justen had a good first round of 42, but encountered bad luck on the 18th hole and came in with a 46, total 88. Bob Cable played the back nine first and shot a 48, but then settled down the front nine for a 41, total 89. Dick Smith, a freshman, took the place of Art Beck, who has the measles, and won his match 112-118. It was Dick's first match. In another year he should be shooting in the 90's. This is a young team and in the next year or so they will be plenty tough. Nick Freund. In Class B, Bill Bacon won over Bob Kralowetz, Jack Buckie over Marion, Jim L'&rkin oyer Emil Simon, Dick Hester over Augie Lundmark, Jackson over Bill Donnelly and Antonson over Rink. Sunday the low net in bracket 1-7 was won by Carl Schmidt and Ed Buss was 2nd. In bracket 8-15, Paul Overton was 1st and Bill Bacon came in 2nd. Bracket 16 and up, was won by Chuck Jensen and L. Antonson was 2nd. Blind bogey was won by Walter Kadisak and Jerry Harpling. Hank Tonyan and John Terrence tied for second. is What a Putt-- Golfer: "Caddie, how long this hole?" , Caddie: It's 300 yards sir." t Golfer: "Just a drive and a putt for me." At this point the golfer swings, misses, and the caddie Observes: "Mister, you sure left yourself a long putt;" PONY LEAGUE by Kelly Brown Ball teams in this era jieed some extra help to meet the financial strain. A dance gives everybody a chance to have a bushel of fun while doing some good for tl^e team. Now, wouldn't, it be neighborly to join the crowd Saturday night and have a good time? While up there, you might remind your friends that the local firemen will sponsor a dance in the new fire house next Tuesday night, May 29. Place Second in Pro-Pro A week ago at the Glen Eagles Country Club in a pro-pro tournament, John Lindstrom, golf professional at Pistakee, paired up with Bill Erfurth, a pro at the Oak Park Country club, to finish and 'take 2nd |>lace money. Bea Hughes, ' brands Hughes* and Doc Handler were seen playing but no score card was seen. Or is it a1 secret? In spite of being rained out on the first night of practice, the Pony Leaguers got off to a good start. The. large turnout of boys was unexpected and a happy surprise to everyone. Equipment was passed out to the four managers: Bart Yegge, Donald Howard, Louis Swedo and Fred Wirtz. The managers, in turn, selected their coaches and the boys were turned out to practice. This gave the managers and the coaches opportunity to watch the boys at the different positions and made it possible for them to select the teams this week. The first estimate was that there would be four teams. The wonderful turnout of boys raised this estimate to five teams. This makes it possible for every boy who sent in an application, to be eligible to play. Due to the efforts of "Chuck" Miller and Ralph Bennett, enough sponsors have been secured to make the support of five teams feasible. Our good friend, Earl Walsh, is seeing to covering every boy with insurance right from the first practice. One great stroke of luck was the securing of the co-sponsorship of the Millers' Bros. Circus, which will give a performance on June 3, 1956, at the American Legion grounds, sharing the proceeds with the American Legion Junior Baseball Team. A good turnout for this circus would show the boys ?. that we are behind them. * * - Advance tickets for the circus can be secured from anyone of the boys or from the following places: SHAMROCKS LOSE TO CRYSTAL LAKE IN ELEVENTH 6-5 Becknell Hiis Home Run; Hebron Plays Here Next Sunday The McHenry Shamrocks battled into the eleventh inning last Sunday at Crystal Lake before losing the ball game 6 to 5. The veteran Roewer opposed youthful Ernie Shook on the mound. Each pitcher allowed 8 walks, but Roewer used his strikeout pitch 11 times. to 4 for Shook. * Crystal Lake clustered three runs in the first inning to gain a lead that was tied but never lost. After two were outi Shook hit Philpot with a pitched ball. George Jackson moved the. runner to second with a hit through " the middle. A hit and an error in left field put Norm Britz on second and scored a run. Radovich sent a grounder to third that went through. The throwin was far off the bullseye as Britz scored. JWcCannon grounded to Stanek to end the inning. McHenry picked up a run. to start things off in the first inning as Sahs walked as leadoff man. Dunlap took a third strike. Stanek forced Sahs. Then Bill Huebsch laid the wood on one for a triple to left. Dale Feffer made a great diving catch of Becknell's liner for the third out. Squeeze Works Bob McCulla walked to start the second. Roewer threw the ball away on Gerry Molidor's hopper, putting runners on second and third. Jack Molidor went down swinging. Shook sacrificed to squeeze in a run. Crystal Lake scored in the second when Rooney walked, stole second and scored on Roewer's hit to left field. Becknell boomed a three-bagger into center to start the The golfers enjoyed playing if510" H°™' ^ ?on™a£ ,»=• Donald s Tavern at McCullom ^ We should answer the call of the firemen. They answer our calls without a special invitation. In our opinion there is no group of men more important to the welfare of our community than those firemen. Let's join 'em for the holiday dance. In the County League, Johnsburg beat Hebron 19 to 1 last Sunday. Richmond beat the Elgin Vets 3 to 2. In a slugfest, Algonquin defeated Elgin Merchants 17 to 11. more the past weekend as the weather was somewhat nicer. At Chapel Hill, A1 Godina started out by breaking a 100. Ray Holms shot a good game, too. At McHenry last Tuesday the ladies' event for the day was blind partners. Dorothy Miller and Gert Barbian took honors for 1st place. Evie Varese and Katherine Rogers came in 2nd and Joan Buss and Helen Miller were 3rd. The event for next Tuesday will be A.B.C. team play. The men of McHenry C.C. played the 1st round of directors trophy tournament. In Class A, Carl Shhmidt won over John Varese, Hank Tonyan over Bob Beilman, Harply over A1 Noonan, Ed Buss, Jr., over Earl Seepe, John Torrence over Tom O'Connell, Hal Nillis over Jack Moss, Ralph Bennett over Tom Lundmark and Paul Overton over Lake; Walter Zarek Tavern at Lakemoor; Toddler Shop, Riverside Bake Shop and Wattles Drug Store in McHcnry. Buy U.S. Savings Bonds fourth and scored on a wild throw by Radovich. McHenry's defense cracked In the . fourth, but only one run resulted. This occurred when WoeK lert raced home while Sahs held the ball after taking in Jackson's short fly ball. Scoring continued as Sahs singled to left to lead off the fifth.. A wild pitch put "hiqi in scoring position and Stanek took care of this by drilling a hit over second. Becknell's home run, over the hill and out of sight in left field, tied the game in the eighth. After the fourth inning, the Shamrock defense settled down and Shook held the home "club scoreless until the eleventh. A couple of old pros set the stage for the winning run in the eleventh. George Jackson, drew a pass and went to second on a sacrifice by Norm Britz. A scratch hit along the third base line by Radovich gave Jackson time to reach third. Mo Cannon put the finishing touch' on the game with a close hit to the left field- foul line. Crystal Lake (6) AB R H Woellert rf 5 1 2 D.
