We wheeled up to Johnsburg tthd saw a ripping good ball game! '•%• '• f .-It was our first look at the Tiger "-ieam this year and our eyes \rt-ere opened wide. V; . . We thought Joe Frett would be deep in rebuilding trouble this year, but saw a fine blend of veterans and younger fellows play the kind of ball that should put johnsburg right on.top. (ITIIMTHIMIIIII If IIITIIIMIIIIIDIIIIinitirh 4 THE GREAT OUTDOORS Wally Freii Gives I Only 5 Hits; Bob | Klaus Hits Homer & ! In one of the snappiest ball , games seen in many a day, the | Johnsburg Tigers beat the Elgin. ; Merchants 6 to 1 last Sunday Of course,, we haven't seen Ray Miller's team at Richmond. Our scouts report the Richmond team is in a winning mood. Well, back to Joe Frett's team. He had Howie Katz back on first base after reports that Howie was going' to hang up his spkes. On second was Howie Freund-- still a great ball player. At short was Bob Klaus. "Everything that Bob did afield, at bat and on the base paths showed class. Completing the infield was Lloyd ( Freund at what is rightfully I termed the hot corner. Lloyd has the arm to whip those hard throws . across the infield and can do about anything asked of a ball player, i By Jack Walsh '1ll!lll!l!l!l!l!l!lilllll!l!l!i;i!l!lil!lllllil!M^ The river has been producing some nice tish lately, cnanriei j cats, bass, big bluegills and even i some fair-sized perch' were caught last weekend and this week. | Bluegills have been hitting small j j poppers, and White Millers, j j fished wet. The crappies should I I be through spawning by now, j j but they aren't. . i I We were talking to Nick Pit-, j ! zen the other day. He said that i the bluegills are acting funny j this year. They move into a i. spawning bed and bite good for ; a day or two. Then they are j gone and it is maybe three or 1 four days before you find them j again. The bass are hitting in I^ake ' Geneva. We heard some Wandy : rock-bass have been caught up there. Not to mention some good sized small-mouths. The trouble is, you have to know where they are. We can't see a weak spot in that infield. Any one of those fellows can switch to other positions should the occasion arise. 1 Northern Mini Bowmen News We aren't ready to rate the out- j field with some previous Tiger: combinations, but Art Jackson J showed he. can still play center' field. Frank Oeffling was in left field j and may develop into quite a ball I player. He is the rugged type and can run hard. He hit two triples Sunday. That's cloutin' 'em in any league. Bob Peisert started in right field .in what might be termed a comeback attempt. Bob played some real good ball for the Tigers in the past and was one of those fellows who got his hits when they would beat you". John Huff finished in right field, made one good catch, hit a single and stole a base. John caivalso take Over- in the Infield when needed. We think Manager Joe wfll find plenty of spots for John dpring the season. Wally Frett pitched a tight ball game and should be a big help with more chance to throw. He had them hitting on the ground most of the time and that slick infield turned in four double plays. "Butch" Nowak did the catching and was alive all the time. He has the build for the job and lacks only experience. Willie Klapnerich was saved to pitch the Memorial Day game at Crystal Lake. The Northern Illini Bowmen will hold the first of the 1956 club championship shoots on Sunday, June 3. Because of graduation day,' the championship shoot for the juniors will be held at a later date, although medals will be awarded to top juniors in the, Sunday event. Food and soft drinks will be available at the range. Members winning awards at other club invitationals were: Bob and Vie Seymour, who won trophies for first place in the Free Style division at the Golden Arrow shoot held at the Bo- Arro range near Crystal Lake on Sunday, May 27. Other winners were Carl Siebold, who won third place in the Archer division, and Alvin Meyer, first in the Novice division. Joan Adams won second place in the junior girls division at Aurora;; - recently and Tony Damptz won first place in the Novice class at Kishvvaukee. Support your local teams in the county baseball league. You'll see some good baseball. i on the* winners' diamond. The j game^was played in 1 hour and j 50 minutes, setting some sort of I a time record, in county league I play. | With sharp support, ^including i four double plays, Wally Frett I pitched a neat ball game. Wally j allowed only five hits, oqe a ' scratch and another on a bad hop that should have ended the game. None went for extra bases. . ' Elgin scored their only run in the second when an outfield error allqWed Grace to cross the plate. This was picked up fast when the Tigers came to bat in their part of the inning. Bob Klaus whacked a liner to right center and circled those bases like a streak of lightning. With two out, Wally Frett drew a pass and scored easily on a triple by Frank Oeffling. Howie Freund walked in the third and moved up on a passed ball. Klaus singled for another run. The same combination used the hit and run to score a run in the fifth inning. Another Triple The final runs were scored in the sixth when John Huff singled along the left field line and stole second base. Frett flied to center. Oeffling hit his second triple to score Huff. Katz grounded to third and Oeffling was held on the bag. Larry Freund singled to center to score Oeffling. Radloff set the Tiger's down in order the last two innings as he began to hit the corners with his low pitch. Fretf and Klaus pulled a slick pick-off play on Grace in the CHEVROLET OWNERS! Strohmier hit -the first pitched and grounded out to second. Graf walked. Art Jackson canje in fast to grab Peterson's fly ball. Paris sent a sharp grounder to short that took a bad hop for a base hit. Steele walked to fill the bases. Goff grounded to third and Lloyd Freund rifled the ball to first base for the final out. Little League By gill Bolger In this week's Plaindealer you will find the first .week's- schedule for both the major and minor league teams. If any games are rained out, they will be played off at the end of the season. ' As you can see by the sched-' ule, we are going to start this!1 Sunday with a triple header. This will give all the major teams a chance to play on opening day. Also, on this day, there is to be a circus for the benefit of Pony League and Legion baseball. There will be two separate showings of the circus, so try to arrange your schedule to take in one of them. Due to the fact that the Little League president,. Fred Meyer, has been& quite ill for the last week, it will be necessary lor everyone to pitch in and help with the work that Fred, usually handled. This includes coordinating a program whereby eevrything goes off smoothly. So everyone please be patient and do ,,what you can to help. Minor League Monday, June 4-- 6:30 Falcons vs. Eagles After much consideration, it was decided that the minor league teams would maintain the same names as last year.
