JUNIOR LEGION By Jimmy Kupec In other county league frames, Richmond goes to Crystal' Lake, Algonquin plays the V.F.W. at Elgin and Elgin Merchants travel to Hebron. Charles Hiller, a flashy ball player, won a letter at the College of St. Thomas. We couldn't gather too much news on our high school baseball team, . but learn they fin- Shed with a 6-6 record. Enjoyed a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dietz a few days ago. Frank Kempfer was their chauffer but didn't wear his uniform. They get the Plaindealer out in California and want us to keep them posted on euch important characters as John Dreymiller. The Johnsburg Tigers won a close one from Elgin V.F.W. last Sunday, 3 to 2. Guess Hank Hiller forgot the box score. Jim Nicholas repeated as table tennis champion at the Junior High and Karen B^ley is the new girls' champion. A group of local roller skaters are competing at the Swank Roller Rink at 111th and Western today. Maybe we can get a report for next week. Wish them luck. Next Thursday, June 14, has been designated National Little League Polio Day. Bill Bolger tells us that McHenry will participate. Attend and give a little extra if possible. Last year over $50,000 was raised for the fund through Little League activities. The McHenry Junior Legion baseball team pounded three Union-Marengo pitchers for nine hits and a 9-3 win at Marengo Sunday. Gene Freund pitched good ball for McHenry, allowing all the runs and all four hits in one inning, the fifth. The local team played errorless ball with the work of Jack Schaefer at shortstop being outstanding. Roger Benson caught his first game and turned in an excellent job. Joe Hiller's two run homer put McHenry in the lead in the second. Tom. Roti's homer and Bob Meyer's hit following a walk to Bujak stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Joe Hiller's double and Jack Schaefer's single were the key blows in the three run fifth. Ackman's three run homer in the bottom^ of the fifth cut McHenry's lead to 7-3. Successive hits byT Bob Meyer, Gene Freund and Herb Baker accounted for the final two runs. McHenry will play Cary on the Johnsburg field Sunday in the first round of the elimination tournament to determine a district champion. McHenry (9) Bujak 3b R. Chapel Hill Golf course reports that Bill Long is coming up fas^ as a golfer as he turned in a pair of 43's. Carl and Doc are still at their bloodless throats as Carl had best ball and Doc won all the golf balls. What happened to Frank Bitterman? Or is he still out planting corn? Jack Sherwood, pro from Crystal Lake C.C., turned in a fancy 34 in touring a fast nine. Wally (T.V.), it is claimed, plays better golf out of an electric cart than he does walking. Editor's Note Jimmy wrote a column that was lost in the shuffle with other sports news last week. Time nor space permit picking it up this week. Just in case you golfers are keeping a scrap booft, we will try to record such items as Ed Buss breaking the 'course record in next week's issue. Bow and arrow enthusiasts were in their glory. Wednesday was the best day. The banks on both sides were lined with bow hunters and fellows with spears. We don't think Frank Gende's boys even went home for meals. Bass and bluegill fishing is getting better all the time. Fox Lake has been pretty good lately, especially in the channels. Pistakee Bay is pretty good over near Skidmore's. The bluegills run fair size over there. You have to keep moving along the shore line and you pick up a few here and there. Our old friend, Joe Guzzardo, has been laid up with a bum leg, but it won't be long and he will be out fishing again. . C.O.F.
