^-.wing Machine 7 1 . -- E n e m y The mowing machine , is the enenfy of the pheasant in a state wildlife technipointed out today. He noted that the haying season, which traditionally begins about June 1 in central Illinois, coincides closely with the pheasant hatching spason. > Skunks, foxes, crows, ground j Squirrels and other predators i usually bjdmed for pheasant losses atfe far loss destructive than the mowing machine, according to Dr. William R. Hanson, assistant game specialist of ' the Illinois Natural History Survey, a research division of the State Department of Registration and Education. In an intensively studied central Illinois farming area, only 31 per cent of the pheasant nests were successful in 1955. Of the unsuccessful nests, 13 per' cent were known to have been destroyed by predators, 37 per ccnt by mowers in clover, rarid alfalfa fields and 5-per cent j by other farming operations. ' The mower, in addition to des- ' troying nests, killed many of the nesting hens outright or crippled I them so severely that they soon 'died. In 1954, approximately 22 i per cent of the hens nesting on the study area were killed by mowers. • [ Figures quoteA by Dr. Hanson | were derived from many hours of field work by biologists em- : ployed jointly by the Illinois Natural History Survey and the Department of Conservation. Delaying the hay harvest by even a few days will save many pheasants nests and hens, Dr. Hanson said. "Anything which delays the onset of the first mowing by as much as 10 days or two weeks permits many more pheasants to i hatch," he pointed out. "Sports- • men could profitably undertake to lease hay lands with the un- ! derstanding that they could not i be mowed until after about June i 20. "Since, in Illinois, pheasants j live in a region of very intensive ; farming, most are on sites which are disturbed by agricultural operations. As has been pointed out previously, a partial solution j of the pheasant dilemma in this j state may result from the soil bank plan which would leave •considerably more undisturbed cover for pheasant nesting. An improved flushing bar or other device to save hens from destruction by high-speed mowers j j[S urgently needed." PROFE^IOnflL DIRECTORS' DR. J. C.
