McDERMOTT, President (SEAL) RICHARD J. HYATT, Village Clerk By Marie Schaettgeo Sara Kay Douglas ha^ been chosen the 1956 Girls State member. This decision was made by her teachers. The American Legion auxiliary each year sponsors an outstanding student to attend Girls State convention at Jacksonville. Here she will spend a week at MacMurrav College with hundreds of other girls of her same outstanding personality and capabilities. A miniature government is conducted, with the Girls Staters campaigning for office. Victorious candidates are installed into office with ceremonies resembling those in real life. The girls who attend these conventions each year come away with a clear understanding of the intricacies of government. Their enthusiasm is unbounded and some of this enthusiasm is shared with her contemporaries. A report to the auxiliary after her return proves interesting and informative to all. RUMMAGE SALE The annual rummage sale for holiday home will Be held on Wednesday. June 27, at horticultural hall in Lake Geneva at 10 a.m. central standard time. Proceeds of the sale go toward the maintenance of the home, which cares for 240 boys and girls during the summer season, including eighty diabetic children, all from Chicago's crowded areas. j JUNIOR FAIR ~ J ! PROVES BIG JOB FOR MANY PEOPLE | Few will doubt the immensity : of the job of organizing a county j fair, but not many people realize | what a great number' of indij viduals are involved in the de- ; tails of planning. | McHenry county's junior fair is a good example, with 123 ! specifically designated officials j for the event, which occurs Aug. , 2, 3, 4 and 5. Besides the four j elected officers, there are four i Extension employees and nineteen directors who are elected i at the annual meeting of the ! association members. They select personnel, set dates, determine | policies, etc., for the coming year. Clinton Martin of McHenry is one of the directors. ' All of this is then broken down into twenty-four different activities, each assigned to a different committee. Each Achair- , mjjn has a spebial part of the fair to organize, engage judges, see that everything works smoothly and then clean up af- ] terward.. 1 Getting down to details, there are ten superintendents who have direct charge of exhibition and show rings. It is their job to see that all rules are enforced and that every child has a fair chance to show his or her entry under the rul^s. In addition, there are sixty-six clerks to help the superintendi ents. Except for the Extension per- ' sonnel, the agricultural teachers during their own Thursday show and the hired laborers on the grounds, all of these people are volunteer workers. The satisfaction of helping ; youth of the county seems to be reward enough, for the fair continues to grow and improve ! each year. TAX COLLECTION Of the total of S4.036,937.49 collected in current taxes through June 1, $582,575.81 came from McHenry. The collecting, according to County Treasurer Vernon Kays, is estimated at about $400,- 000 more than at the same date last year. Read the Wfent Ada.
