PRESENT "NURSE OP YEAR" AWARD AT *58 CONVENTldN Local nurses will join approximately 2,000 members of the nursing profession. from every part of the state in attendance at the Illinois State Nurses*' association's fifty-fourth convention at the \ Congress hotel, Chicago, Ctet. 10 to 12. High on the convention business agenda will be discussion of &' recently completed report which establishes job functions, standards of work performance ahd qualifications for all categories of nurses. The result of ijfour years study by the members Of the American Nurses' association and the state associations. « report on the project was approved by the ANA in Chicago in May of this year. According to Frances /L. A, Powell, president of the Illinois State Nurses association; "The nurses have invested much of theiS* time and dues money in this analysis. . Now we will consider ways in which to implement the report in all nursing situations In Illinois. The reassessment of functions was vital in view of the rapid expansion of nurse responsibilities that has taken place in recent years. A clear under- • standing of functions, standards and qualifications by both the nurses and their employers will make possible a sounder utilization of available professional nurse personnel. We further believe clearly defined functions will result in an upgrading of nursing care everywhere and serve as a basis for improved salaries for all nurses." A highlight of the convention activities will be the presentation of the first "ISNA Nurse of the. Year" v award, for distinguished nursing service by a registered professional nurse. Each of the thirteen districts of ISNA have made a local award, and one nurse from among these final district nominees will be chosen as "ISNA Nurse of the Year for 1956" at the convention banquet to be held Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gold room of the Congress hotel. Fran Allison, television and radio star, will be mistress of ceremonies. V.F.W. DEVISE SYSTEM OF DETERMINING VALUE OF DRIVER TRAINING STEALING BUNDLES One of the most versatile of gll card garnet is Casino. On the one hand, adult? find it one of the most purely scientific games in the card repertory. When played expertly, it requires a high degree of concentration, mem* •fory and reasoning. & A t t h e ^ nine time, ^ it is a fine game f o r children, so appealing in fact that it is often mistakenly considered only a children's game. You can teach it to children when they are merely a b 1 e t o m a t c h up colors and then proceed to train their powers of observation by matching up the suits. Finally, you can give them practice in reading figures and letters by playing the game as it is described here. The Casino version for children is 'called Stealing Bundles. Basically, it is Casino without the builds. ' Although two, three or four may play, the game, it is best for two using a regular pack of 02 cards. 6 As in Casino, the deal is progressive --four cards to each of the two play* ers in each round--with four cards dealt face up on the table in the first deal. Elach player in turn may capture a card from the table which matches the denomination of a card he holds in his hand. That is, a seven can be won with a seven, a, Jack with a Jack, etc. Building is left out until the child is sufficiently quick at arithmetic. Captured cards must be placed face up in a stack in front of the player. And here is where the game gets its colorful name. If a player can match the top card of his op?" ponent's bundle with a card from his hand, he can capture the entire bundle and add it tp his own. Ther deal is won by the player having the most cards after the stock is depleted. Cards left on the table go. to -the player who was the last to take in. i Good strategy for the game dictates) that you delay captures frcm the table whenever possible, so as to minimise the risk of having your own bundle stolen. It is also important to count the number of cards of each denomination already played and this, in itself, is a good memory drill for any youngster playing the game. Once a child masters Stealing Bundles, he is ready for the many other card games for children, including such favorites as Concentration, Go Fish, Old Maid, Slapjack and Menagerie. AUTUMN GOOD TIME TO INSPECT HOME CHIMNEYS It's a good idea to inspect your chimney at least once a year for soot accumulations and flashing failure And to check the mortar joints to see whether they need repointing. One good way to check the chimney for leaking joints is to use the smoke test, says D. G. Jedele, extension agricultural engineer at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. For this test, build a fire of paper, at the base of the flue-- probably in the clean-out pit is best, Jedele says. When the fire is smoking well, cover the chimney top with a wet blanket or wet feed sacks. Any leaks will show up plainly. If you find an accumulation of soot in the chimney, the best way to clean it out is to hire a furnace cleaning company with modern suction equipment. But you can do the job yourself by using a weighted sack filled with straw and attached to a rope. Most chemical chimney cleaning compounds are dangerous to use, the agricultural engineer points out. They produce a high temp* erature to burn out the soot, and using too much compound may produce an explosion or an uncontrollable fire. Gas furnaces can form soot if the burner is not properly adjusted to burn clean. Coal or woodburning furnaces, however, are more likely to soot up the chimney. Damp spots on the ceilings or walls near *a chimney may show that rain water is leaking around the flashing or through a leak in the chimney wall. Sometimes a hood over the chimney top' will help to keep rain out if you can't find the leak. : If a husband gives a party, -unanimously agreed successful by all present, his wife tells everyone it would have been a far better party if she had * been consulted. To accomplish this, Secretary Carpentier's Drivers License department will put a "tag" on student enrolled in driver training programs. With this system it will now be possible for the; first time to determine accurately just how much better such students are than non-student drivers. "This is another example," Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier said; of the vast development of the driver control program growing out "of the (forward looking Illinois Driver'License Law." . Records of all high school students can be separated and analyzed through automatic punch card equipment to compare traffic law violations and accidents with those drivers who did not train in schools. The new system got underway with the beginning of the fall school term.. The purpose of the new system is to discover the value of the high school training program in its attempt to produce safer and better drivers. As no records lieve that considerable impetus could be given to driver training in the school if it can be established that trainees develop into •safer and better drives than those who do not have the benefit of the training. There is also the belief that more schools would join the "Behind the Wheel Instruction" if real value can be shown. In addition, insurance companies and graduates of the program could be justified if driving records after graduation reveal the program has a definite value in, placing safer and (better drivers on our highways ing their companions. , With McHenry children back to school, it might be a good idea for'parents to persuade them to study.
